300/440/550 90' 650 electrical help

I have a 90' TS 650 is just recently bought. Took it out for about an hour when I first got it and ran well for a TS. On the second trip a few weeks ago it would run for about a minute or two and the die, as if you hit the kill switch. Would start right up again and then die right away. Put it on the trailer out of the water and started checking for fuel, spark and compression and had all the above. But, while I was checking for spark, I had the front spark plug removed, connected to the spark plug wire and hand-held right above the front spark plug hole. The ski started while doing this test. I put the spark plug back in the hole and the ski doesnt start. remove it and try the test again and it starts???? very strange to me that the ski starts like that. Someone suggested that the CDI unit could be going bad. With that said, I want to test my CDI/Coil but do not know what the Ohm reading should be. Does anyone know what the reading is? Anyone have any suggestions as to what they think my problem may be???

remove the spark plug caps from the wires.
then cut back some of the insulation to expose the metal wire, then use a pair of needle nose pliers and pull on the wire.
it may be broke somewhere inside the insulation, which would cause the spark to not get to the caps.
when you move the wires around it may cause it to spark.

also the spark plugs top ends could be loose too.

it could also be a leaking crank seal.

good luck

I dont know if its any help at all but I had a similar problem with a 90 650SX. After monkeying with all kinds of electrical transplants I found that the wiring harness had worn through where it runs over the back of the motor by the PTO cover. I fixed the broken and nearly-broken wires and it never gave me a problem again. Moral of story - check the wires very very carefully all over the machine, 17 years of rubbing may have finally got to it.

Fixed?????

While I was cutting back on the front spark plug wire, I discovered that the core-wire was broken inside the spark plug wire, about 1 1/4" piece. It looked shinny with no green corrision. But when I cut the wire back enough to expose the core-wire, it was green. I put the boot back on and the ski started and ran well with the house water-hose connected.. Although I know I did not attach the boot all the way on. I couldnt get the dam thing all the way on. I think I will buy new boots and see if I can get it on better. I am wondering if the spark plug wires would be worth my wild to replace with new? CAn I just replace the wire without having to get a new CDI unit asa well? Or does the wires just unscrew from the CDI unit?.... BTW I have a waterbox leaking issue I just posted. any help there???..

you can replace the wires yourself but its a job, or you could send it to jetskisolutions.com and they could do it up better than new.

The TS is running again thanks to your help. I cut back the spark-plug wire enough to get spark. Had it running on the hose for 10min without any problems. I will have it out at the river in a fews weeks for the ulimate test, but I feel there wont be any troublew. Thanks for yoyur help.

CRAP:bs2: As I stated earlier, ski ran great on the hose, but this weekend I get it out at the river and the same dam problem accures. Starts great on the trailer, get it on the water for maybe 45 seconds and the engine dies. would restart, but barely as if the battery was low. idles ok, but hit the gas and it dies. I looked at the 650 bible on PWCToday for the ohm readings but there is nothing. anybody know what that reading should be.
