Ok, so I been meaning to post this up for a little while now but refrained until I was a little closer to completing the job. I hate to see build threads with two pics of a bone stock ski with decals coming off and nothing else for three weeks!
I am far from finished right now but I gotta do something while I wait for parts to come in the mail.
Heres a little background: Bought this ski from a used car dealership in El Paso, Texas. I drove past this ski about 300 times on my way to work everyday and decided to stop and take a look at it one day. The outside wasnt in too bad a shape considering it had been out in the hellacious weather for God knows how many years? When I popped the hood, I found a dusty but mint condition engine compartment. I offered them $300 bucks for the ski and they told me to take a hike because they wanted $7000 for the trailer and 5 other junked out sit down skis that accompanied this Superjet...
I came back about a month later and tried an offer of $400 bucks and this time they let me have it.
Here she is first day home: Remember, only $400 bucks but I got no guarantee it even ran!
I cleaned her up, fogged the motor while I went to buy a battery. When I came back, she started right up with zero hesitation after 18 some odd years of just sitting...During this time, I was also finishing up a Kawasaki 650SX in the mean time so I put the Superjet project on hold for a year or until about three weeks ago.
Without a real plan in mind, I decided to strip it down to get ready for paint, man that sure was a bitch to strip all those decals and turf. After I stripped it down I ordered a used protec pipe to mount to my 650 motor, so I pulled the old pipe out. A couple days later, this came in!
For whatever reason, I decided to start looking at bigger motors because everyone says that their first mod in a 650 is to get a bigger motor and somehow I fell into this really clean 760. I thought the price was right, and the hours were low and I just bought it!
I know, I know it don't have the low end power like a 701X but when it comes out of this ski, it will get a port job and a high comp head. That will be another build altogether though.
Here it is still in the couch it came out of:
So Here are a few pics when I had her all stripped down and gettin ready for paint
Little primer and its already better.
I decided to go with a paint scheme I saw on an HSR Benelli that I liked. I just changed the color and made the paint lines follow my vintage ski a little better.
I went with Blue for the stripe because it matched my turf. Then white and black for the rest. It has a House of Kolor Pearl in the clear that makes it really pop in the sunlight. If you look closely, the painter apparently put too much pearl in the paint and turned the black pole a dark blue! He actually tried to convince me that it looked good and in broken spanish, I made him redo the black with no pearl, just regular clear and man o man was he pissed off! This is how it came out though :
When I brought it home, reassembly was a bitch also. I thought I would never get anytwhere with my workspace lookin like this.
Finally, I was able to start returfing it. I tried to match the paint as best I could so it would go with this wild turf I picked out almost a year ago.
So, this is where I have come to a little break. I still have to install the new motor, new fuel lines, a primer kit (hopefully, I am waiting on the right size carb plugs) I redid the vinyl on the chinpad with a black carbon fiber texture (next post, you will see). I have the pipe in powdercoating right now along with the ride plate and intake grate that should look pretty wild. Handlebars, bow eyes, and oh ya a new hood seal from WatCon. Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions. Thanks.
UPDATE!!!
Ok, So I took the ski out for her trial run on Memorial day weekend and had a problem that ruined the whole weekend. I was cavitating really really bad. Like 3 miles per hour bad. Turns out I had a bad pump seal and a shabby looking prop. Those are still on order but this is what she looks like right now. I hope thats all she will need to run like she is supposed to. I will also be adding a pisser and maybe a bilge pump although I have never needed one before I guess its better to just have one in case.
Heres whats up her skirt
Nearly done!
i am also thinking about either some awl grip paint for the bottom or even herculining the bottom to protect it from beaching and sliding it around the scissor stand. This auto paint just dont hold up like I want/need it to.
