Picked up this gem!

It's the 3rd of 4 myself and some buddies purchased off a gentleman. I of course couldn't be left out on bad decisions so went for the non running project...... Idiot..
Was a forgotten restoration project so actually came with some neat NOS goodies like a freshie rear seat cover, end gaps, grips etc.

*Insert clean engine bay pic here*

I currently have everything but a carb & ebox... I think... Motors got good compression. But I am struggling to want to spend any money on putting this 500 back into it.

Been staring at marketplace looking for hidden WaveRunner 650LX's... But alternatively, anyone got a 90+ 500 SBN34/38??? That may make me commit, the thought of dealing with a round body makes me wanna die.

Got one side of it polished up, got the tower all reassembled, threw out the broken fuel selector, ripped out the rear intake hoses, crap design to flood the ski gonna just do frogzskin, cut down the giant tower hose much the same. Put the new rear seat cover on and well just look at it!

Needs a big Ronald McDonald sticker.

Thats a nice one. I think theres more of these around than there are old Superjets. I have one that has been a very successful 701/144 conversion.

They work really well with just a 650 conversion and a good stainless impeller , 650's are damn near giveaway price nowadays , anything more than a 650 and you will need the larger 144 pump conversion , all you need are the LX bedplates to install a 650-701 in here plus the engine and e-box of course, I think I did mine in a couple of days it was really simple but yes my 650 was out of an LX , I put the 500 engine back in the LX and sold it which made the whole project free at the end.

Mine has a 650 in it with a Protec pipe and a Skat impeller , twice the fun of a snoozefest stocker, do it you will never look back.

This set of bedplates is pricey and if you put an ad up or do some looking around you probably can find them much cheaper somewhere else.

Yeah I figure if I just grab a 650LX, I get motor, 650 133 prop, bed plates, carb & the exhaust you don't have to cut the hull

Have any pics on the protec pipe and how you fit it? Would love to entertain that

Yes it's a really simple operation if you can find an LX , I have an LX here but it's about as clean as that WJ of yours so I am going to have to fix it up and keep it as a survivor .

I think I paid like $75.00 or $100.00 for the LX I did my swap with , it had one cylinder with low compression , I honed the cylinder put a spare piston and rings in it and went with it.

Here is a pair with a trailer in Gainsville for $900

Yeah unfortunately it's now Spring... See if I can get that lucky

The bed plates you need are easy to spot since they don’t have splash cover mounts on them. A 650-701 is an easy swap and works kind of okay with a stainless impeller in the stock pump. If you are more ambitious, a WR3 pump/ inlet will pick up the 500s mounting bolts and the length is perfect with a 1100 mid shaft. The hard part is that the WR3 inlet needs to be trimmed a lot and so does the jammers pump tunnel. The next hard part was making a custom muffler that sits behind the engine. The 500s muffler is too restrictive for the non tuned stock 700 exhaust that I used. All the stock vents were removed and sealed. A single 3” hole and flex tube was added to the hood between the engine and tank for ventilation. The hood also needs a small bubble added to clear a stock 701 exhaust. I’m running it with an uncovered hole in the hood for now and haven’t had it take on any water yet. What’s it like to ride? It doesn’t have very much grip for turns. Only a kid can sit on it without moving. The 144 pump gives much better thrust and hookup over the 500s unit. Mine goes 44 on gps with a stock 61x engine. Everyone likes to ride it at least once!

If you do by some weird happenstance decide to put the 500 back in it do yourself a favor and replace all those exhaust gaskets on the back of the motor before you put it back in.

I have tons of those gaskets here that you can have , just pay the shipping .

Also I am pretty sure a Seadoo carb off an old SP 587 91 and up models would work if you ran a primer kit and ditched the choke , you would of course have to put the right jets in it and most likely swap out the throttle wheel, I have those 38mm carbs here also.

You think a 587 bolt pattern is the same at the base? Been years since I touched one I can rig up a throttle

Could you measure?

On the topic of the 500 wtf are the oil line looking small lines running down the side

All 38 Mikuni's have the exact same base pattern all the way back to the BN carbs , so yes it will defiantly fit , Seadoo used a weird side pull choke and they mounted the cable mount for the choke and the throttle on the flame arrestor top cover , that is why the choke won't hook up and work like on a WJ , on the throttle cable wheel you should be able to unbolt the one on the BN and put it on the SBN , easy peasy .

The old 38 Mikuni BN carbs are not that bad , they are not finicky like the 440BN's were , I ran them for years as a set of twins on my Kawasaki 550 reed motor , it did pick up quite a bit more power when I swapped them out for a set of dual 38 Kehins though , it was a noticeable difference.

The jet sizes are listed on the parts fiche 77.5 pilot and an 80 main jet but the two things I am not 100% sure about are the needle and seat size and the spring gram rates , Knowing what Yamaha normally does I would say they probably used a 1.2 needle and seat and a 95 gram spring but that is just my best educated guess

I think you're overall right. Skip the 500 all together. I can already tell it'll just nickle and dime me for what... To wanna rip it back out anyway?

Got the other side polished, went through the stash of rear trim pieces I got with the ski and came up with a best combo, and ordered up some missing hardware

That Protec pipe on mine fits in there with no mods to the hood or anything , just letting you know.

Othere than some fiddling with exhaust tubing the only issue I remember was fabbing up a bracket to hold the e-box.

Is it the style that uses the stock manifold?

I got a file for a bracket from a gentleman who used to sell them. Got 3 ordered up from sendcutsend figure I can sell the other 2 @cost for other folks.

Yes but they also produced manifolds that were used with this pipe , it's the couch pipe like you are looking for , VXR , WRlll .
