FX-1 144 in fx-1 pump question

Pretty sure the sj shaft is longer than the fx1, I have never had them side by side. There must be a difference cause theres a good market for them. The fx1 has its own tank, pole, and waterbox as well.

Could you move the 144mm pump back 2".

You could, but that requires more glass work and hacking up the ride plate? I'm not too sure how much better it would make the FX perform.

The trend seems to be....
The Superjet guys are trying to make the SJ handle like the FX, and the FX guys are trying to make the FX handle like a SJ.

Or something like that....

I just don't like the ideal of if you have a shaft go bad what do you do?
tnj4life brought this point up and got me to thinking. My shaft has been going for 16 years with no problems. How often and way would a shaft go bad?

This is another great thing about the kawi mod, the shafts are in 2 very popular kawi couches which makes finding replacements quite easy.

Does any one have a good link to the Kawi pump mod.

Heres a couple links that will give you detailed instructions, special fx is the one who come up with this mod. The biggest piece of the puzzle is the modified bulkhead bearing assembly. You have to press the fx1 midshaft and bearings out and either come up with the right size bearings and seals for the driveshaft id and the housing od or just machine the yamaha housing and press the kawi bearing sleeve in the yamaha bearing housing. Specialfx was doing this for members for some $$$ but im not sure if hes still in the machining business or not.

Most people don't have much trouble with shafts, but sometimes crap happens. Bearings and seals in your pump can wear out and cause your shaft to wear out if you dont get the bearings changed and of course you can mess up alignment and the splines can be chewed up. Mainly maintenance issues.

Haha, thats funny and true. Slap tubbies on, increase throw, bigger pump and a fx1 becomes a SJ. Dcut a plate, lose weight, chop the rear and a sj becomes a fx1. Next trend will be to put the fx1 pump on a sj to make a bigger challenge:icon16:.

I agree guys, my sarcasim sometimes doesnt come through. Just like the fx1 pump comment in a sj, i wasnt being serious. I have both skis. I just think its funny how ppl complain about the squirrliness of a fx1 and try to make them more stable. Then you have the guys that complain about the sj being too heavy. Maybe a lightweight sj hull is the best compromise??
