i used a layer of my oem mat to add a little cushion also left a piece of foam to fill the void on the sides. this is a RN, squares will be different.

9mm plush with 615's, i wear an 11 wrestling shoe and was very comfortable, but the combo was a tad loose, added another layer of turf on the underside of the footholds and worked out perfect. i would think shoe/foot size plays another deciding factor, so you may be limited?
