I was prepared to do the acorn-on-a-fender install but Blowsion suggested otherwise with the kit they went me. So . . . I did it their way. Time will tell. I didn't perforate the pump area from the tray with my drilling so I guess it should be OK. I certainly understand your concern.

The interior of the insert is threaded and the straps are bolted down into them.

So the install kit consists of a tube of Plastic Weld and some self-tapping knife-thread hex-drive with-flange inserts. You drill a hole in the tray, fill it with the mixed Plastic Weld, and screw the insert in hoping to not strip the hex head insert. Here's my install:
