Sounds normal I like to keep the rear air holes above the water while doing a fountain and with a proper hood seal you can do them for quite some time if the front holes are plugged. Mark44

An after market hood still lets in plenty of water if not more. XFT hoods let in water like a funnel. Just make sure you have a good hood seal and make sure the hood it properly aligned on the seal. Mark44

You can also purchase structural fiber glass sheets from McMaster Carr to fill in the holes and glass the seams. Mark44
