Ya, those are junk, I tried them a long time ago. Glad you figured it out! But you could of really saved yourself some money and be like MIster Ho. Mr. Ho would of cut open that filter and cleaned/flushed it and glued it back together for re-usage.

I put a SBT in my Dads Yamaha WaveVenture 1100 and its still going strong after 5 years. Ive also ran a SBT crank in a high compression DASA 800 NPV with MSD TL with very aggressive curve on 110 Sunoco fuel, B pipe, BJ 44's, ported, etc. for 2 years of hard riding, then it blew..lol But hey man...

SBT use to(and maybe still do) build warranty engines for Yamaha... hahaa Also they make their own gaskets, but sometimes they call and buy gaskets when they are out of some certain ones or their material. That's when they get the good stuff...lol

I'm sure you have the engine(well "motor" now in electrical terms lol) compartment sealed up very well. Do you get any water in there, and is that motor water resistant? Just curious! Such a cool project with your Son, have fun figuring this all out with him! :)
