ive turfed a LOT of skis. generally the ski, itself, only needs one coat, but depending on temp, humidity, sunlight factor, heat gun usage, wait time (all evaporation related), the turf can most certainly use 2 coats. sometimes 3.
having the 'sheet' on the truck is useless. you still need to cut your pieces, then let them warm up.
sand the back of the turf and the area to be turfed with coarse (like 30 grit, or so) sandpaper. then wipe both surfaces with an acetone rag prior to applying the contact cement.

the compression will be lower, at 6500 ft above sea level, than at sea level.
he said he has a mariner head, but didnt mention dome size.
you used a 180 main on a 650 kawi? thats seems a little rich.
you could do it that way.
OR
you can premix first, with the oil injection still connected.
run the engine and make sure the premix is getting to the carb.
THEN remove the oil injection.
