I wear helmet every time I ride (flat or surf), no matter if others think its gay or overkill lol :). My helmet already has several cracks on the chin area from hitting the ski literally head on.. Wear helmet guys, its good for the brain :)

Put a pipe wrench on the prop and stress hit it with some good hammer, check your intermediate shaft seal also. This is more likely to leak and cause cavitation

Make sure your hood sits right on the seal, not crooked. Loosen up the nut on one side and then adjust the pivot bolt from the other. There is not much play tho.. On a side note, if you ride some serious surf as all Australians do, I very much doubt you would worry about the paint :).. D.
