Here are a few pics of my dual-purpose rack on my Xterra. It's a hitch mount mx rack and I attached 2x6 on the outside rails. It's rated for 400lbs and only cost about $150.

Water will "stick" to a hull that "slick" or flat. The scratches create air bubbles and actually reduce drag.
