I've had 2 550 starter bendixes go bad. They both would start turning the engine and then the bendixes clutch would slip and the engine would stop turning. Sounds like your problem to me.

The midshaft will work with 650 or 701. I put a 701 in my brothers 650, it bolted right in.

The squarenose came stock with the single carb 61x in 94' and 95'. All roundnose skis came stock with the twin carb 62t cases with 61x cylinders.

The piston port cranks had replaceable rod pins and the reed cranks were not. But the cranks are interchangeable.

With dual carbs it's possible that the butterflies aren't syncronized, that would cause a runaway.

The reeds from the 6m6 are actually different than the 61x reeds so you'll need the intake manifold, reed manifold, and reeds.

Stock carb on a 440 is a Mikuni BN38. I know Dennis Kirk has kits for these.
