installing footholds for the first time

fixing to do mine for the first time as well, everyone on here uses 3m 5200, some use epoxy, but definately need to glass the seems to make theme stonger and make theme water tight, and also need some 2 part foam

Thickened epoxy to secure them, stainless screws or rivets to hold them in place, then atleast 1 layer of 8 oz glass over top. Install them with 5200 and I don't think they'd hold up more than a couple rides.

I just riveted mine in, and then several layers of glass. You definitely want to make sure no water will ever get back there.

Epoxy of any kind. #8 3/4" screws. grind smooth then 2 layers of glass.

dang my bad could of swore i heard someone say they used 5200, ive got me some epoxy resin comeing from us composites on thrsday, can i use that to glue theme in just add the silica thickner

Alot of stuff will work to thicken it up. I use johnson's baby powder.

Nonono! Lot's of things thicken epoxy for sure, but many weaken it. There are thickeners called "fairing" thickeners which leave an easily sandable mixture for surface finishing. For footholds you need a thickener that adds strength like cabosil, not powder or microballoons or anything like that.

oh ok i got blowsions fiberglass kit, came with some silica thickner just wasnt sure when i needed and didnt need to use it.

I used the wamiltons instructions too with my old SN. I removed the screws vise grind them off. I used West Systems epoxy and the high density filler they have. Also laid a piece of cloth and watery epoxy in the tray. I felt it was a shot in the dark given my experience, but those are like 3rd grader instructions, so it worked perfect!! This time I will using the same instructions and will be putting some biax down for the floor and running polystyrene.

what about any type of of automobile 2 part epoxy. My work has tons of stuff by crest east coast. We have a 2 part epoxy panel bonder that with stands up to 35,000 PSI pressure. We used it to bond car roofs and quater panels then mig the factory spot welds. i got holds from tom21 and may start tomorrow.

I got US Comp 3:1 epoxy resin. What else would I need to secure the holds to my SJ. I am guessing the 3:1 epoxy resin is used for the mat glass, but is it strong enough to glue my holds to the hull? Also which type foam is best? i see USComp has several strength foams to pick from. I only want to make one order and make sure I have EVERYTHING I NEED. Thank you

You need some cabosil to thicken the resin, some screws or rivets to clamp the holds down while the resin cures (you can leave those in or take them out - doesn't matter), some 8oz cloth to reinforce over the seems, and 4lb foam to fill. You might want to think about reinforcing the tray between the holds while you are at it, and 1708 biax is great for that, or just build up a few layers of 8oz.

cool thanks man, I got some SS screws holding em place now, but didnt want to jump to epoxyin them in till i knew what i needed.

No problem. Make sure the resin is nice and thick to bond them in (it takes a surprising amount of cabosil to achieve that - it needs to be like peanut butter ) and apply liberally around the seem. You want to see it oozing out everywhere when you tighten the screws down. Then wipe the excess off immediately but leave a little oozage all around the outside. Check for any air gaps and goop some more thickened resin in there if necessary. You end up wasting quite a bit, but that's better than leaking or cracking later. You can put the 8oz over the edges right away - you don't have to wait for the thickened epoxy to cure and it's actually stronger if you don't. I cut it into strips about 3 or 4 inches wide and patch my way around the edge. When you put the cloth over the edge, you can squish it down onto the oozage, and that forms a nice chamfer to help the turf bond. I'll sketch a pic and post it up in a couple of minutes.
