Gary aka "retroicon" SJ and B1 restorations

just got to paint the plastic pieces and we are done... let me know when you want to pick them up... Another thing.. I had to buy 2 more pints of color, forgot to tell you that earlier.. good thing cause I did not have enough black. Now you have color in case you need to repair something. It was like 40$ more...

Neither Sergio nor Steve would own up to that hood, that's all I know.

It was heavy and wouldn't fit right.

Great color choices.

It's heavy as hell, that's for sure ... and I guess I'll find out on the fit here once I get it all back assembled and back in the water.

It seems that the hood lip area that fits into the hood seal didn't quite fit the hood seal channel.

I'll take some pics of the paint, in the sunlight when I get up to pick them up in the next couple of days ...

Damn ...

Alright, so I picked up the hulls from Nick today, and the paint looks NICE ...

These pictures sort of suck, but they were the best I could do right now ... the first shows the flake, the second just shows my mess of a garage.

Those aren't scratches in the paint, just dust and pollen ...

When I cracked the hull, I hit the bottom in Daytona and that broke 3 of the 4 motor mounts, and the engine was almost loose in the hull ... and apparently the mid-shaft housing needs to be replaced. No pics of that, as you can see, the super jet hull is sort of buried under and behind everything else.

So I'm all excited to start putting the engines together, and pull the stock head on the Super Jet ... and what do I find, MASSIVE SCORING, and light coating of rust on the cylinder walls.

My fingernails catch in the score marks & grooves in the sides of the cylinder walls, so it looks like I'm going to have to send the cylinders out to be bored, get new pistons, rings, clips, etc ...

This is getting expensive. :(

On that note, got a question ... I have a 701 Riva Girdled head with 35 cc domes that hasn't been installed. Since I have to go bigger on the bore, I'm thinking going from 81mm to 81.5mm isn't going to cut it, probably have to go to at least 82mm or maybe even 82.5mm pistons. How does that work with the domes that are meant for an 81mm bore?

I guess I'll be pulling the whole motor apart just to check things over ... so it looks like I'll be out of the water even longer. :(

Nooooooo ... Apparently X-Metalworks has a lead time of 4 weeks for a new bore. Any somewhat local suggestions?

Watercraft Factory? LPW? Someone else?

Paul is on a cruise right now. Any machine shop can do the bore for you if you give them pistons and tolerance.

81mm domes work up to 83/84mm bores.

I guess that would explain the lack of a response to my phone call, or a reply back to my email ...

SON OF A ...

So I pulled the cylinder to get it ready to go out to someone to be bored, and there's a TINY chip on the bottom of one of the sleeves. Based on all the freestyle porting I've seen pictures of on here, it doesn't look like something that would be removed or cleaned up.

I'm thinking a re-sleeve is probably going to be more expensive than just picking up a new 61x on here from someone, and having it bored ...

Oh, and more good news. Decided I might as well pull the flywheel cover, and I've got the lovely wet, oily rust thrown all over the damn place in there ...

When I pulled the motor apart, there were a couple of bolts that had locktite of some kind on them, so it looks like it was rebuilt at some point, and done pretty poorly based on the chip, scoring, and non-sealed flywheel/stator area.

I'm shocked this thing was still running. Pics in about a week ... headed out of town for a biz trip to Chicago, and my camera battery died.

P.S. Anyone got a 61x cylinder, freeride ported, ready to go? If so, PM me. It looks like I'm in the market for one ...

Alright, time for an update ...

It took a while with work, and other stuff, but I finally shipped the cylinders off to LPW to have them bored out to 83mm, and get some pump gas freeride porting done. I'm also going to pick up an ADA head with some new domes since I'm getting the porting done. Also having Paul lighten up the stock flywheel while everything is all apart ...

So, it's progress, sort of ...

Looks like the stator is going to be salvagable, which is good news ... just have to clean it up a little more, and I should be good to go there. That's all super jet stuff ...

Picked up some contact cement today to get started on the turf jobs here pretty soon on both hulls.

Another setback though. When I was about to put the pump back in the Blaster I noticed that one of the inserts was ripped out of the pump shoe ... so I picked up a metal super jet pump shoe that should fit right into the Blaster. Also picked up one of those MSD total loss start/stop switch cutoff things so I don't need to run an extra switch for the MSD on the Blaster. And, got all my wiring, weatherpacks, the weatherpack tool, and other miscellaneous electrical stuff to make sure I'll be solid in the salt.

And, I also got some replacement screws, bumpers, and trim pieces for both machines just to make the look nice and pretty ...

It's coming along slowly, but I'm making progress.
