2 wheel drive on boat ramp

I'm looking into buying a new truck, but I don't really want to spend the extra cash for 4x4 if I don't have to. Was anyone able to launch their skis on the wave rave boat ramp without using 4 wheel drive?

Don't know the boat ramp in question, but I've been launching my skis with a two-wheel drive Ranger for years without too many problems.

I was reluctant to buy my 2wheel drive with this in mind but so far it hasn't been an issue anywhere. I took the money i saved and bought a TBM Beach Cart so neither my truck or my trailer ever has to touch salt water.

are you saying that the price difference between 2 and 4wheel drive was the price of a BEACH CART?

4-wheel drive is pretty much worthless and expensive

til you need it :fingersx::bump:

yes you can launch at the ramp up in new era (wave rave) with a 2wheel drive truck. it's steep but it can be done..most of the time the creek is too shallow there to be able to put the whole trailer in the water without putting your back tires significantly in the water however and that ramp is always super slippery..but as long as you just put the tires right at the edge of the water and muscle the ski's back on the trailer a little bit you wont have a problem.

Back on 1990s, I knew a guy at Lake Hopatcong who used to tow his XPL with a modded 300ZX TT. The ramp was always slippery with algae and he's never had any problems.

Launched there several times with no problems in my 2 wheel drive Colorado. Last year I brought my beach cart and launched from the beach instead if dealing with the stream.

I had never had any problems with a 2WD until one day at the ramp I put the truck in park and got out and the truck door hit me. The truck was sliding backwards with it in park. I jumped in and slammed on the brakes and done a little burn out to get the moss cleaned off of the ramp. Then the truck held it's place.

2 weeks later my niece was picking me up at the same ramp and wasn't smart enough to use the brakes to hold the truck in place (which stops the front tires) and just kept hammering the throttle...... I loved that Ford Lightning

My daily driver might be 2wd but the tow vehicle will always be a 4x4 from now on. No exceptions.

ive lauched at the new era ramp plenty of times. Sometimes with my deisel 4x4 and others with a toyota fwd car. The ramp is always steep and slick but you will be alright with 2wd.

and if your only at that ramp for wave rave, ill pull you out if you get stuck

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. After a winter like this one, I almost think 4wd is a must! It's just so much more expensive. I'd rather spend it on other things..

Shop around...If you drive 4 or 5 hours to buy a truck you might be able to save enough money to pay for the 4x4 and leather options...

I was thinking about this thread tonight while I was in the snow.....LOL
I was giving the school bus some extra room tonight and hit the edge of the snow piled up by the plow which of course pulled me off of the road into the ditch... NOT a problem. Locked it in 4 wheel drive and went through the ditch around the tree and out of that guys driveway. Can't live without it...

I will alway's have a pickup and it will alway's be a 4 wheel drive.

+1

I haven't owned a 2wd truck since 1972, and never will, to me they are useless, but as far as the question of the OP needing it, probably not. Even tho I have it, very seldom do I use it at a boat ramp, even w/ the heavy 21' Skeeter. If the ramp has ice on it I need 4wd, other than that no.
I do use it off road a lot tho.
