need help getting umi steering off of a blaster!!!

today a guy gave me a UMI Steering system for a blaster. Unfortunately I can't get it off the hood. I've got the guys hood and I'm trying to get it off the hood so I can give him his hood back.

I took the nut off the bottom of the steering shaft thinking the whole shaft would just slide out from the top. Well it won't. I thought it was supposed to just slide out. Is it pressed on to the bearings? There is definitely some corrosion on it so I hope its not locked on there.

I'm just wondering what the proper way to remove the steering system is. Also what parts will I need to replace to rebuild it and make it like new. I know I need to replace the o-rings and bearings, but is there anything else I need to replace. I heard there is some sort of plastic piece I'll need to replace.

Thanks for any advice,
Dan

Hit it on the bottom with a hammer. If that doesn't work, get a bigger hammer! Those berring rust and lock on to the shaft. You just have to break it free.
Good Luck

Yeah I've been beating the heck out of it and it won't come off. I'll keep shooting it with corrosion lube and keep trying.

Thanks for the advice. At least I know I know I'm doing it right.

your probably gonna have to heat it up with a torch to get it apart.have you taken off the 5 or 6 bolts around the perimeter that hold onto the hood?you have to take the bars off first then the cowl/top section of hood before you can get to these bolts

this job is probably past lube getting it off but the best corrosion busting lube I've ever used is fluid film. that stuff is amazing. good luck

I've drilled every bolt out that I had to because some dumb :):):):) obviously never heard of Teflon paste or antiseize. Two long nights of working on that and I finally just put it back together with the good half the bolts and rode this morning f it.

Just to make sure I got the concept right about how this comes apart, would a ball joint pulled work if I wrapped it around the housing and pressed against the bolt?
