I'm not a Kawi guy, so I need some help here.
I've got a 2008 SXR. Stock, other than a new X Metal handlepole and steering. I'm a surf rider only, and been a Superjet guy since 1990. But, as I'm getting older, I realize I need the bigger more stable ski.
That being said, I've got $1600 to spend on upgrades (not inlcuding footholds, which my neighbor is doing for me as part of a trade). Would you guys who really KNOW the SXR please give me a list of your thoughts on what to buy and why, and the cost of each item (roughly). I'd really appreciate it.
(side note: I'm not interested in top speed at all. I'm just a surf rider).

Well, depending on whether or not you have access to the right equipement...

bore nozzle: free-$40
cut head/am head: free-$400 (depends on if you want a girldled head, which is not necessary if you're not running a fpp dry pipe)
wetpipe: $550-$750 (depends on new vs. used)
freestyle cone: $40

what he said above plus
Lightweight flywheel - $200-400
Aftermarket reeds $100-300
Bigger carbs 44 or 46mm
Bilge pump and/or one way valve/Versiplug/ scupper
D-cut stock rideplate

My thoughts were an FPP wet pipe.
So, you guys are against the ride plate / intake grate / impeller upgrades? Are you saying by not listing them that they aren't as important as the other things listed? Or that there isn't enough "bang for the buck" so to speak?

like I said D-cut stock ride plate is as good as am plates for freeride and surf.
Intake grate you shoud buy more agressive one. I got Works and like it.
Stock sxr impeller not bad also.
For surf get hood straps and handlepole limiting rope.

It's all depend what you going to do with your ski and how far you willing to go. it's 08 so motor will work for couple more years, after you can port it or bore it, or buy big bore kit.

Are the hood straps and limiting straps a must?
Is the hood coming off and the handlepole breaking a common problem with the SXR? (remember I have an aftermarket handlepole already)

Not really to both yours Q.
Stock handlepole is breaking a lot for SJ and SXR in surf. But if you gonna go big : big jumps , barrel rolls or backflips I'll say get a hood straps, if you want to keep your hood or ski, becouse if hood come off you may sunk ski

If you can fit the flywheel into the budget, definitely do that too.

Don't bother with reeds, as they're only a minimal gain and the stock ones last forever.

Add a intake when you've decided you need better hookup.

Hood straps a bonus if you're bangin in the surf.

oem prop is a very good prop for all around riding.

When $ allows cut it back and add a larger hub pump stuffer

exactly....not really needed on an SXR. I am still running a stock impeller and rode my SXR with a stock intake and rideplate until this year... (6 years)

I only switched because my ski is 75 pounds lighter. :fing02:

FOOTHOLDS OR STRAPS: #1 mod
hoodstraps are a must or you will eventually sink your ski.

As far as power goes...
FFP Wetpipe and a flywheel....then bump the compression (mill head or aftermarket)

You are now ripping!

Props on the X Metal setup...huge upgrade!

Thanks everyone. That tells me exactly what I need to do.
If I mill the stock head, how many thousands do I tell the CNC guy to take off? And what PSI will that / should that bring me to?
Any suggestions on what flywheel to get and where to get one reasonably priced?

I am not sure. LPW and Group K mill them very reasonably....Keep it around 175 180 for pump gas...

The flywheel:
Put an ad looking for a used charging aluminum flywheel.....or
get it lightened by LPW or Group K.

Can someone post a pic of the D cut SXR plate?
I'd like to see the dimensions (being a Superjet guy, this is totally like starting over).

I would just cut it flush with the hull. D Cutting it didn't do enough to raise the nose for me.....It still liked to nose dive in the surf.

Can you show me a pic of the back of your ski?
I mean, did you cut it flat-out flush with the back of the ski? Did you use a die grinder to do it?

Hood straps, limiter rope, and wetpipe. You will be at a great starting point there. Also you will want to add a bilge pump if riding in the surf. Blocking off the front air intake hole on the hood will also help out a ton with water intrusion.
