Riding Stock

Alright guys. So I just picked up two new 09s. I am not the best rider yet but, Im not out there looking like an idiot. Here is my question....

What is the limit of tricks I can do? I realize that this will never be a SJ and dont want a SJ (which is why I bought an SXR) I enjoy freeriding and carving through turns but, I would mind being able to do some subs or other basic tricks.

Basically I need to know when I reach the point of , "I either suck" or this boat will never be able to accomplish anything other than free riding. What is this thing capable of stock. There has got to be some vids or pics out there.

Im talking stock, I realize I could throw a couple grand in mods. There will be plenty of time for that later. All in all, I still only have less than 40 hrs. riding mostly a 94 SXI.

I heard rumor someone flatwater rolled a stock sxr. But not sure
But on my dads stock sxr I can sub, nose stab, tail stand, turning sub, fountain, and some terrible hood riding haha
I know you like the sxr, but imo you should have gotten the new yamaha if you were buying brand new anyways.

I just started riding last year on a stock sxr here is a video of some of the basic squid tricks you can do, my skills aren't the greatest but I'm a rookie

I also read on here that someone was doing flatwater rolls on a stock sxr.
This year I just picked up a 09 SJ and like it so much more than my sxr.

Aside from tricks, timed laps around some buoys is tons of fun. Especially if you have identical skis. Me & my buddy have 08 Sj's and will be running buoys Friday afternoon/evening on the DE in upper Bucks. Shoot me a pm if you want to join.

You can do the same tricks that you can do on a stock SJ...All the SJs on here are modded to all hell...

To help out:
Bilge pump. (I recommend 750 Rulemate without a switch, could save your motor)
Block off the front air intake on the hood. (duct tape works fine, keeps water out)
Footholds. (Big mod, but the best one out there...makes the biggest difference)
Handlebars. 4 or 0 degree UMI or Blowsion(Changes your entire riding position)

These small mods will make a world of difference in what you can do.

I gotta stay pretty much stock for this season. It took a little convincing the wife to pick these up. With everything else I have, I get the mod bug and she knows that.

I picked up some of those foam rails to install (until I eventually get foot wells) as a beginner.

If I block off the air intake on the hood, should I drill other holes? Should I pick up the simple metal one blowsion sells?

I think I may swap out the bars for the 4* blowsion ones.

The rest will have to wait for the off season. The wife is heading to Afghanistan so, she will not be able to interfere.

No, do not drill more holes.
Tape them off when you plan to do tricks, if you know your cruising, just pull the tape off.

Honestly, I have found that 0 degree bars give you better leverage on the ski than the 4 degree bars.

I would say just open up a second air intake in the back and block off the front one permanently...worked great for me and plenty of air even with a pipe. The blowsion one is fine, but can be done for free pretty easily. If you want it clean, get the blowsion one.

The stock hood latch system is sketchy at best...... for sure.

Also I would open up the back of the hood if you close the front.

Just my .02

Any body got pics of where and how big you put the hole in the back? I manage a fab/machine shop so Im gonna have the guys make me a little bracket like Blowsion's and block the front one off.

........I definitely do enjoy how the SXR really hugs into the corners. It just wants to carve. Very easy. Then again, my only relation is to a 94 SXI. I have been very impressed on how well you can really rip tight fast turns.

Just so you know, WET BOX will take your stock SX-R, no footholds, and roll it all day long.

He is a friggin' machine!
