FX-1 FX-1 question

I have an 1994 fx-1 that I have only ridden a few times so far.Im curious though does anyone have the same issue as me. When I make a right hand turn my ski feels like it wants to dump/roll on its left side???----Almost like the center of balance is off???

Thanks in advance.

Mine felt like that til i got the hang of the squirlly hull. Now i don't feel it.

How does it compare to a 550? I have a 95 fx1 im about to put in the water as soon as i get it turfed and im curious as to how it will ride. Ive only ridden a 550 so far.

Its gonna ride simmilar but your gonna love the power compared to the 550.:smoker:

Thanks for all the feedback. You are right about the power though. I race a 91 square nose so going from the stable squarenose to the smaller fx-1 will take some getting used to. thanks......

Id also love being able to actually ride! My 550 is having some problems so i cant wait for my turf and primer kit to arrive next week so i can start ripping my fx1. I really dont know what to expect power wise, cant wait for the suprise

Man, if you're coming off a 550, you are in for a big suprise.
Way better power to weight.
Try to score a head and a pipe as well.

it is like a 550 on steroids.

a must before a pipe or head is the pump mod. contact bonzi bob on here and talk to him about his mod. you get rid of the 122 (i beleive is what is stock) and put in a 144. you will need to get a 144 pump. from what i have been told it is a must and one of the best mods to do to the fx1.

I rode my fx1 for the first time yesterday. Rode great and way better then the 550 but it took a little getting used to still. I really wanna do the pump mod now, i have noticed the cavitation alot and im keeping in eye out for a pipe but i dont know what fits right in other then the b pipe with fx1 chamber

the pump mod probably ends up being as much as a bpipe if you have some one do it for you. if it was me, i would do the pump mod first. if you keep adding more power the pump will be you problem. i look at it kinda like a car. base hp is good, but if you can't get that power to the ground it does no good. getting the pump mod would be like dropping a ford 9 inch rearend in your car. then when power is added you will feel the power instead of the cavitation.

The B-pipe, head and enhancer made a huge difference even with the 122 pump. But I think when I complete the pump mod (finally install the 144 shoe) it will have that much more thrust.

The 122 pump is not by any means, maxed out in stock form. Its just prone to cavitate, which is amplified slightly by higher HP.

What improved with the b pipe and head? What is an enhancer? Can you jump out of the water from a standstill easier?

What makes cavitation?

^^^ Yes, if you want to mod that ski even halfway complete, you will need to do the pump mod.
The 185 psi head, B-pipe and enhancer made this ski into a little rocket, but then you go to lay her over and the pump sucks air pretty easy.
The enhancer I speak of replaces the stock CDI ignition. It gives you a hotter spark, better timing curve and adjustable rev limit. I have them in all my Yamaha motors. It would be the last of these mods I would do, but a worthy one nonetheless. (I think).

I'm runnning a bpipe, with a skat 17/23 and I found just after those two mods you hit the rev pretty quick! Still lots of power though!

Well, the SJ is just a beautiful handling machine. Period.
It carves well, has a decent power/weight. Even the 650 is one hell of a powerplant for a 650. Just plain bullet proof.
The sj bottom hull from 1990 to 2007 is unchanged for good reason.

As for the FX-1, I am not really sure what Yamaha had intended this design to be for.
As it turns out, it is like 30 or 40 pounds lighter than an SJ.
I really dont think it is that great of a hull design, but it has its place in my fleet.
I could easily be all wrong because I have not yet completed a full pump mod. I still need to cut in an SJ pump shoe and poop can the bored out 122mm shoe.
The FX-1 is very light feeling and flickable. Tubbies might do it justice too.

I just dont have a complete/fair opinion on the FX yet. I own 2 but to get one you will have to pry them bars out of my Cold Dead Hands.

thanks oz.

I'll have to try and find a superjet to test out so I can tell for myself. It must me completely different.
