Bendix Question

I just removed the flywheel cover
my bendix (what i believe is my bendix lol) slides back and forward approx 4-5mm and up and down 2-3mm.
The teeth along the front gear the corners on the face are shiny I'm assuming worn?
Is this amount of play common, is it suppose to do that in order to operate? Obviously with it sitting against a spring there is suppose to be some forward movement. I am concerned though that it doesnt look like the teeth line up properly. However ski runs great?....

Confused newbie :aargh4:

I would assume its moving up and down because the front is not being supported by the flywheel cover since it is removed, if so that is normal. Don't pull it out too far as you could drop the washer back there, causing damage. I would put it back together with some quality sealant and ride. Make sure there is a spring with two washer installed on either end in the flywheel cover (in the bendix support hole).

Korned, that sort of travel sounds normal, so as long as the gears on the bendix come out and return without sticking, the bendix sounds good.

Shile it's out soak it in some ATF for a night or two and that will clean any buildup on the inside. When a bendix goes bad, usaually the plate under the counter weights breaks or the spring around the counter weight breaks.

thanks for the advice, think I freaked when it first moved, have since taken another look and after thinking about how it operates realised it is a completely normal part of function. Cheers :)

If you aren't opposed to removing the flywheel, you can completely disassemble the bendix for cleaning. Break it down and scrub all the junk out of it, spray with car/brake cleaner, get it nice and pretty and then re grease it and put it back together.... works like a champ.

We thought my bud's ski had a bad starter or bendix, did the above to the bendix and now it starts like new, every time...

i've been told to soak the bendix in mineral spirits, working the action every 1/2 hour. soak for 8 hours... let dry, then soak in any type of engine oil (2 stroke, 4 stroke, doesn't matter), let soak for as long as you want, then let dry, and re install.

Probably works, but disassembling is not hard at all, like one or two snap rings and its totally apart, you could have it disassembled, cleaned, and relubed within 45 minutes.....

You just have to fight with the plain heavy wire snap ring on the end. It can be a pain because it is real heavy duty. Sometimes you over bend it taking it off and it causes a little trouble sliding over the retaining washer. You have to make sure the retaining washer goes completely over the ring.

But yeah take it apart is a much more complete clean and lube.
