KTM maybe?

$@#%&*&*%$^%%$**#%^ crap. I just read that the best place around here to ride within 100 miles just got bought by a greenie land trust and is closed to OHV's. That really puts a kink in my plans. I may have to rethink all this.

garrett, its an expensive sport. there is no question.

bikes require maintenance and attention to detail way more than skis do. if something breaks on your ski while youre riding, wahtever, you can laugh it off and get towed in... no bigs... if something happens while youre 3rd gear pinned somewhere....

ride safe, ride with good equipment, dont skimp on anything..

it is an extremely rewarding sport. you feel awesome at the end of a day of riding.

Yes, it can be expensive if you go that way....... You dont have too.

1999 I bought my XR250 for $2000.00
Helmet $150.00
Boots $125.00
Chest Protector $ 100.00 (Guessing in this range)
Pants and Jersey $130.00
Gloves $35.00
Goggles $40.00

1 Tire $75.00
Chain and Sprockets $100.00 (estimate)

Bike $2000.00
Gear $600.00
Misc Maintenance $200-300 (during the time I had it from 99-06)

All total about $2900.00 spent out.

Yeah, you can go out and by the flashiest gear, have multiple sets of pants and jerseys but why?

It does not have to be expensive.

South on 65, somewhere near Cullman there are some trails you can see off the side of the Interstate (West side) Dont know if they are any good or not.
Hit up the local shops and ask where they all ride now.

lol, youre focusing on the mickey mouse stuff.. the gear is really only expensive as an initial investment. (helmet, boots, knee/neck braces, etc).

as far as the pants/jerseys go, thats the cheapest part! my last combo cost me $110 for the whole thing! thats peanuts relatively speaking.

its the bike maintenance that gets pricey if you ride often, plus, lots of people scrape by with cheap/messed up gear and just "hope" they never crash or really just dont know any better. you ever read about how often youre "supposed" to replace your helmets? did you know helmets are really only good for ONE crash? the better (read $$$$$) companies usually have a trade-in policy for crashed helmets. you send in your helmet and they give you a credit towards a new one. they use yours to study how/where/why the break and make their new ones better. companies like Shoei do this, but those are pricey lids! my v3's are $300/pop. i tend to buy one a year.

i just dont agree with giving people the impression that this is a really cheap sport. it really isnt in the long run if you ride often and you really pound on your stuff.

edit: this is just from my experience, and mostly riding mx/sx, not woods/trails.

Agreed on all points.

I will also add that maintenance is a real issue that gets over looked. whille you can go cheap on somethings ( run Rotella T in the trans and ATF in the forks ) other things you really need to spend the extra mony for the good stuff. ( break pads, bearings, gaskets, seals, pistons, etc). speaking of bearings and seals, you'd be amazed at how many people NEVER chack theirs at all. some of the most important parts of a bike to make it function correctly are the most ignored by the average rider.

oh, BTW Saki.... trail riding is actually tougher on alot of components than MX/SX due to environmental issues.

hey boys....I am pretty sure everyone knows that anything with moving parts will require maintenance...and that it is not free :poke:

agreed with your points too.... cept maybe the last one. :beerchug:

i agree with your outlook on maintenance. i tend to see the attitude of alot of people like "my bike is clean and it starts, cool, i'ma go ride." :frown:

i just seen too many injuries and people get hurt for stupid reasons.

god knows i'm not the greatest mechanic, but i TRY to keep my bike in shape. :skull2:

youd be surprised...really, you would.

yep, and stuff like helmets and boots too.

seriously not trying to jab at you guys, but its funny when a trail guy shows up at the track, you can always tell. jeans, construction boots, and a tshirt. and the helmet is usually 4-5yrs old too. :buttkick:

edit: my view on this stuff is, its MUCH cheaper to spend a little money on GOOD gear, than to get hurt, go to the hospital, and spent TONS of TIME AND MONEY trying to heal up (and lost wages). if you can prevent any injury with just the smallest investment in protective gear, why wouldn't you?

i remember back in the day when i was the ONLY guy around here riding skis with a fullface helmet and getting laughed at.

Wolf...my worthless husband spent almost a YEAR building a jet ski from virtually scratch...you really think I don't understand how much crap costs?

The man is ONLY attracted to expensive hobbies.

not everyone presses their little cute jerseys so that their mom can take a picture of them to post on a web site :booty:

while i do love my pictures (And i do!!!) that wasnt my point. construction boots and jeans wont protect you the way a pair of QUALITY boots will. and if youre wearing jeans, youre 99.999% probably NOT wearing knee braces, and jeans will not protect you as well as a good pair of riding pants will either. i wont even bring up the t-shirts.

edit: while i may not be the FASTEST guy at the track, i do have LOTS of experience crashing. so, i have formed a pretty well thought out and experienced opinion about safety gear.

Yup, any impact to the helmet and it is a retirement party for it......

learned this back in the mid 80's when I started riding.

For me, the sport was rather inexpensive, I only rec road, and that was only during fall, winter and early spring, and not every week....... If you ride every week then yeah, it can be expensive, just like the ski's.

yeah, ive been to crappy tracks that even make you sign up to be a "member" first ($50), then ask for $20 for the day.
:bsflag:

or, you can just ride at the best track in the whole wide world, seminole. :bananalama:

yeah, I was at a crappy track like that a few times. I think it was called Red Bud or something like that. :swordfight:
