I just picked up a 2005 YZ250F... anybody know how to change the oil? And how much to put back in and what weight to use? It has an oil reservoir in the frame.

Freakin' 4 strokes :slap:

on my 426 it depended if i drained the frame tube and the transmission. I usually just drained the frame tube and added fresh oil to the dipstick. Also no reason to buy a replacement filter, i always just cleaned the stocker and re used it. If your off on the amount of oil it wouldn't be the end of the world, since they sell kits to bypass the frame tank reservoir, as long as you change it often you will be alright.

good luck

How often do you change it? I read somewhere (I forget where, this is new to me) that I should change the oil every 3-4 hours. That's insane! I only trail ride. On my last bike (DRZ250) I changed the oil about once a year (and never had a problem in 5+ years).

ive got a 2004 wr250. i start the bike and let it warm up a wee bit and to get the oil pumped back into the frame. undo the drain bung in the bottom off the front down tube (carefull the oil squirts out far enough to hit the front tyre). let it drain till no more is coming out and then i drain the crank case to get any oil left in there , its the drain bolt on the sprocket side down by the frame rial . if you are going to to the filter lean the bike on its side so the wee bit off oil dosnt spill out on the floor . i do the filter every second oil change and the oil every 6 hours to be safe .
from memory i put in 1.1 liters of oil for a oil change and 1.2 with a filter and then just start up the bike and let it warm up and then check on the did stick and add a wee bit if i have to .

they are a great little bike and you can do so much to them to make them go better . i have a heap off modds done to mine and it rips .
post up a pic off you new toy for us all to have a look at

at least its not a crf...i hated the two different kind of oils you had to use (one with moly for the topend and one without for the tranny/clutch.) biggest pita ever! can tell you how many times i switched them up and had to start all over.

i used to run mobile one red cap, it was cheap and was perfect with no additives. but they stopped making it a few years back.

I used to change it if i spent the day at the track, but if i was just riding around i would do it every month or so, depending on how hard i rode.

my '03 yz450f and '06 yz450f were two different methods of changing oil altogether. make sure you follow the right procedure for your year.

Does it drain from the tank into the motor if it's not running? My dipstick shows no oil... should I add some oil before I start it? I haven't started it yet.

Yamasaki, I think '06 is when they took the oil out of the frame.

Thumpertalk.com is great, I found a free online Yamaha manual thanks to that site.

This is actually a better way though. I usually run the same oil in both my tranny and motor. Rotella T baby! But... When a piece of you engine breaks and falls in and ruins part your tranny you'll wish you had the two seperate oils!!! But anywho, i'm buying another 2 stroke. F the thumpers... they are funner and i'm not riding seriously anymore.

Ask yz250fpilot. He knows all about 250f's hence the screen name. Oh wait, he got banned.

Awww did somebody get a wittle spankin for beind a bad boy. For shame.

Back on topic. I always changed my oil frequently in any of my off road engines that used a wet clutch to keep the contamination down for the rest of the engine. Oil and filters are cheap compared to major engine components getting trashed from dirty oil. High performance engines in extreme environments demand accelerated maintenance schedules if you want them to last.

yes it does drain back into the cases with gravity when its been sitting . there is also another oil strainer on one off the oil lines that you should check every now and then .

Is yours a WR?

Mine is a completley stock 2005 YZ250F. It's been sitting for a awhile (over a year I think), I just got it going so now I'll change the oil.

I only rode it for 30 seconds but it feels like it has some balls! My last bike was a DRZ250 which was good for trail riding (which is all I do) but it didn't have any balls.

yeah mine is a wr , the wr is based pretty close to the yzf. i have done a heap off mods to mine now(290 kit, ported head, hot cam,s different valves and springs after market ohlin,s shock pipe and a couple off other wee tricks) and it surprises alot off people and bigger bikes. i brought mine cheap with the top end in bits , so i did all the mods before i even rode it .
the yzf will be night and day better than the drz , you will love it. and if you wont more ball,s there is so much you can do to mod them
