are foot straps mainly used in surf and not flat water?\

yes
imo footholds are needed for flat, straps are needed for surf.

its 6 one way half a dozen the other. its what you prefer. ive seen guys put both in their ski. when i put my new holds in my ski this winter im probably going to put a front strap in too.

I ride lakes; water conditions are flat, chop and large boat wake. I didn't want to tear up my hull at that time so I tried the much cheaper and less evasive method of 2 straps at the rear for airtime (using yamaslut attachment method). When normal riding or carving, I have both feet out of the straps, left foot extreme forward and right foot extreme rear.
