ahh... I'd rather not take the cylender off!! if it comes to that I guess I have too, but I will try the extensions first I suppose..

I thought this would go together much easier!

Also Whats a bottom tap... I think my set is might not be bottoms?? Anyone got a picture of what it looks like?

this is the set I have

A bottoming tap will be flat/blunt on the tip, a starting tap will be pointy.

I was in the EXACT same sitation.

I bought a BIT extender from walmart, when I was helping son defoam his hull.

its similar to this, but longer, and hex on top for the tap handle..

black and decker brand, and from walmart for about $3

it has s et screw to hold the tap, and I stuck the tap handle on the opposite end of the extender.

go slow and steady, and blow the hole out, and move to the next one.

worked like a charm for me.

wait, if you doing this with the cylinder still on, you may have a hard time even getting down into the cases at all. You may want to just run your regular bolts in and out, spray wd 40 down in there to try and clean them out, use a air compressor to blow down in and blow the trash out.........

its easily doable with the cylinder installed, thats exactly how I did it a month ago.

Why go through all these steps of extenders sockets bla bla bla when the cylinder is just sitting there? Apparently it isn’t tightened down so the gasket is still good and it would take a whopping 10 seconds to lift it off and about 35 seconds to put it back on plus you can now have a steady hand and tap right at the area you are working without all these extenders and you save 3 bucks.

Am I missing something here?

Well, I'd rather not mess with seperating them if I dont have too, thats more chance for an air leak. I do have bottom taps so I'm good there.

I got the middle studs in just fine, then moved to the out side and the first two i tried I cant get in all the way. I was just removing the factory bolt, then putting the stud in, so I didn't take all factory bolts out at once.

I guess I will try the tap / extender trick..

you can also use two nuts and "Jamb" them together and run the studs in also.
at this point, I just use a pair of vice grips or Jamb nuts them to get them in.

as mark said it does not take long, 2 weeks ago I needed to install a thicker base gasket to get my squish right. Installed the new one, measured the squish and found out I had too thick of a gasket, next night I went out to just take the cylinder off (I was butt tired), planned to finish it in the morning, well, one thing led to another and 35 minutes later I had a stock gasket back on and the cylinder put back on and plumbed up, ready to go. next morning I am looking at it and decide to measure the squish one more time. At that point I looked at my digital micrometer, stupid me did not check the settings, I had it set to mm instead of inches. The thick gasket was correct after all. 30 minutes later, yup, pulled the cylinder, swapped gasket and had everything back together.

point being, just do it, it does not take that long, even if it takes an hour.
or, grab the vice grips and have at it!

well, I have 4 left to get in, I was using the 2 nut technique to get them in.

I had to use vice grips to get them back out! And scratched the crap out of the studs, so I ordered 2 new ones from ada.

I'm going to try and clean them up with air, and a tap tonight see how it goes.. if not I guess I'll pull the cylender...

Sucks!

well the tapped worked great! As soon as I get the 2 replacement studs from ada, I can finish it off!

Anyone know what the tap size is for the head bolts? Might aswell clean them out while I'm at it.
