OK.....So I got 2 free 91 650sj. I got 1 to run like a raped appe. However the other one wont run worth anything. I put new fuel filters in both the plugs looked good in both. Put new gas in them both, and fuel pumps.

Now the one that wont run.....At first it wouldn't idle, and would act like its choking for fuel, so we rebuilt the carb. Now it wont run without it being held wide open and running off the rev limiter, and its smokin like a SOB! The fuel mix is the same as in the other one so I know its right. Anythoughts? Did I screw the carb some how?

Any thoughts would help!

did you check the jet sizes in the carbs? You may have different jets in one which would require an completely different adjustment of the screws... there a lot of other stuff it could be too....

Sounds like you have it WAY too rich... think about it... if you need it WOT to run then you are letting way more air in so it will mix with the large amount of fuel you have going into the carb... did you check the reeds when you took the carbs off to make sure they looked good? Did you check popoff in the carbs and pressure check them before you put them back in as well? Did you check the needle/seat to make sure that didnt need replaced too? just some ideas.... and do a compression check too....

make sure you tune that other one good too... make sure you arent running it too lean

Sounds like your needle may be stuck /sticking open. I ran into this same scenario when I rejetted and changed my N&S on my 91 SN. Smoked like a motherfawker and was oozing goo out the exhaust, and never seemed to rev up past 1/3 throttle or so no matter how much I squeezed the trigger.

If riding it with the hood off solves the problem then it's an exhaust leak.

Nope not that had the hood off when I was trying to start it. Good thought though.
