"does widening it increase or decrease stability?"

Actually, i've found that on skis with small trays, when you widen them they are MORE stable because you can move your feet to a wider stance if needed, but thats a matter of opinion i guess.

I totally agree. Wider is better. I have footholds in my 750, and it made a huge difference in handling over stock. After I put the holds in, the ski stopped skittering across the surface in sharp turns and the pump actually stayed hooked up better. If anything, more width helps you carve and lean harder and it's def. easier to correct if you get off balance. The tray of my SXR is so wide, I can sit down in it and my hips barely touch the sides.

I have widened my SJs tray with full length slots. Its the best thing that I ever did to a ski. There was a couple of technical problems to solve though. The first was with the exhaust tube being in the way. The second was finding a good way to support the tray since it is not connected to the lower hull. Anyway, the ski is much more comfortable to ride at high speeds and I never have to worry about coming out of the tray.

I had that with my 750 footholds (they were the blowsion klowners which are really big), and i had to cut a hole in the bottom of the right footwell then glass over it to be able to install it. Pain in the ass. Next time I'm going with regular holds

Always wanted a wider tray and since I killed my hull and need to start on a replacement I decided to go W I D E .

Don't know if it's a good idea to go all the way out to the sides of the ski for strength reasons but how much strength does that foam add, really ?

Anyway, started on it tonight and have this so far. Yes, there will be a channel all the way down to the front of the tray.

The only strength that extra foam adds is to the sides themselves. There are a few people running flat decks with foot straps... I thought about it for a while but realized every time I get on the ski, I put my elbows on the sides.

I LOVE my setup... love it... makes it much easier to recover and ride faster over rougher water with the wider stance.

Just doing a bit of garage surfing (actually van surfing) to try the new tray out.
Do any of you that have the channel all the way to the dash use the front part of it ?
Just don't see how or when it would come in handy, that's all

Since it's cut, I will leave it but not too sure about it just yet.

I am going with the dance floor option.

I am going with the dance floor option.

The way I have it now (foam scooped out all the way to the sides) it would be so easy to let the blade slip and go all out.
It's hard to take that step without having ridden a flat deck first but someday I will go psycho on a hull.
