Why do people pour oil into flywheel cover cap!?

Why do people think oil goes in there? When I took the flywheel cover of my X2 for the first time last week, a good pint of oil poured out into the hull. What a pain in the a$$ to clean up, by the way! And not the first time it's happend!

because it looks like an oil cap on a lawnmower or generator, maybe?

one thing about skis that have oil in there is that there is usually ZERO corrosion on the parts. clean em up and youll find that theyre usually preserved very well.

sometimes, (though not often) one man's ignorance is another man's gain.

not that i've ever done it, but it sounds to me like it wouldn't harm anything, why not put some in surf engines to prevent corrosion?

I like to dump 1oz of TCW3 or ATF in the cover for corrosion protection. You can tell if any water gets in if it looks milky inside.

on my 300 it has a oil cap for the starter. i filled it up again the other day with some heavy weight oil. should be good. i check it once and awile for milky good indication of problems. seals and whatnot about 4 oz. i have never put oil in the superjet. if it is coroding then there are other issues.

I just bought an 84 550. The previous owner put gear oil in it. It started fine at his house, but when I got it home, the starter was dead from ingesting oil. I would advise anyone to check this before purchase to save $100.
