I have had nothing but problems lately I tell ya. I've about had it with this thing. Last night my ski was running the best it has all year, and then today I head to the lake after work, drop it in, go to start it and nothin. Sounded like the starter was spinning but nothing was happening. Maybe a bad solenoid or something. I don't know...

Anyway, where is the starter located exactly on a RN SJ? I guess I need to take this thing apart yet once again. Anybody know a quick fix to this problem, or do you think I need a new starter? I'm hoping I can get it going again tomorrow. It's gonna be a nice weekend for riding.

bendix is not engaging.

starter is under the exhaust manifold. you can get to it while still in the hull. and like superramjet said it is either your bendix not engaging or the tip of the starter sheared off. i would go with bendix most likely though, and that can be replaced with motor still in hull as well.

yep its the bendex. pull the flywheel cover and the flywheel (you'll need a harmonic dampener puller for that) the benex is the big gear thing behind the flywheel.

that happen to me not to long ago new bedix and the problem was fixed!!

Mine does the same thing, somehow the bendex has got A little
rusty and wont engage. I just tap the start button A few times
and it will usualy start to work. take the flywheel cover off and
spray the bendex and the flywheel down with WD real good
and it will work for A wile,but not A perment fix

the wd or crc may be a quick fix for a little while, but if that bendix siezes up while extended it can be a gernade and mess up all sorts of stuff... replace it.

Wow that really sucks. I took everything apart, and took my starter out before I read all this and I was going to replace it. I've never heard of a bendix before. Where do I get a new one, and can I replace it myself? I think someone mentioned that you need a special tool. I guess I'm done for the weekend...

The only special tool you need is the harmonic balancer puller, which you can pick up from any auto parts store. That's for pulling the flywheel off. Once that's off, you can just yank the bendix out by hand. It's really not a big deal. The worst part is pulling out the battery and gas tank.

take flywheel cover off, put a bungie cord in spark plug hole, loosen flywheel bolt, install puller, tighten down on the center bolt like hell, flywheel will pop, pull it off (dont lose the woodruf key) and bendix will come right out. 30 min job if you have done it before.

oh yea, get an OEM bendix, they are the most reliable

oh, and don't let broken ski's get you down. the all break. sometimes you don't get much of a break between break downs. we've all been through it.

had the same problem - someone told me my battery could be too dead to spin the starter fast enough to have it engage...

charged the battery and never had that problem again...

Thats an hour job and only that long because of the stupid gas tank.

You won't need the bungie cord if you use a flywheel puller that lets you hold the main body of the puller with a big adjustable wrench and turn the center bolt. If you use one of the more simple designed pullers you might have to stuff a rope down one cyl to keep the crank from spinning to remove it and when you torque down the flywheel bolt. I usually just use an impact air ratchet with about 70lbs of pressure to tighten the bolt and skip the rope trick. Never had any problems.

Go to autozone and get a steering wheel puller...works great! it looks like a chicken claw, costs about 20 bucks.

How do you hook that to the flywheel - don't you have a clearance problem around the edge? Those things risk breaking something - the flywheel has three threaded holes in it for a reason: so you can extract it safely with a harmonic balancer puller.

if you dont have air tools the bungie cord keeps the motor from turning over when you wrench down on the puller. as for it being an hour job... ive done it so many times in the past month that i could win a race doing it lol

Yeah I'm getting pretty good at taking out the battery, electrical box, gas tank, and pipe. I've done it about 5 times in the last few weeks. AHH! So where do I pick up a new bendix?

sbt has them, any yamaha dealership, riva mabye, ppl have used oem ones for around 50... they may last a day, may last 5 yrs its a gamble. the new oem is expensive, but they are the best. i keep spare used ones from motors i have taken apart just incase.

You use the motor mount bolts and than screw those in the flywheel. I know which one your talking about...i was mistaken, it is a harmonic puller I thought mine said steering wheel...my baaad
