Advice wanted. How to get full throw on modified C.A.T.S.

with the help of #.0 and Tom21 We've modified my raider trim setup to throw almost 30 degrees. With the 2 brake levers we had at the shop we were able to pull a cable ½” and 5/8ths” neither were enough pull to pull the raider nozzle to full up trim even with the bolt as low as possible on the lever of the trim ring. The bolt is in the same place as Darrins build:

We came up with the idea of using large fender washers around the bolt to increase the throw. I’ve also thought about using the throttle wheel from a carb on the bolt. What do you guys think? What is the best way to get full throw?

Better lever, freestylegeek has a good one that has an adjustable pivot for more or less throw. Tektro I think is the brand.

Nice post, now I know how to mod my raider style drop nozzle this winter.

On a side note, I want this lever, complete with an integrated bell!

thanks darren.

crab. my mod to the nozzle was pretty striaght forward. we used the reduction nozzle from my sj because it was already bored over and I believe it's a little longer with a better shape than the raider. we made 2 bosses from aluminum welds, drilled and tapped 2 holes 3/4" from the end of the reduction nozzle and clearenced the top of the trim ring to get nearly 30 degrees.

It also seems that the 96+ trim ring might be better becasue it has rubber around the exit of the ring to seemingly stop blow by. I'll do a complete write up when its on the water.

Tektro XL750 looks like a good one actually, 2 finger design, I may contact them to find which ones have the longest throw.

Mine has the rubber on the trim ring, and I have the raider exit and turn nozzle as well, it seems to work just fine and can be easily modded for more nozzle swing easily. Only problem I have is my cable comes through the hull on the right hand now, but may be long enough to go over or under the pump.

Yeah man,
You just need more pull with the lever. I dont think you can go much closer to the pivot point than you already are.

if you want to have an idea of the amount of cable travel you need use this (assuming 30 degree max trim angle).

Cable travel=Tan 30(degrees) x distance from pivot point to cable attachment point.

in case you are rusty with your calc tan 30 degrees = .5774

Yep, it's all about the lever. I'm getting 26º with my tektro lever and it pulls like silk.

thanks geek. I'm going to try a v-brake lever from a local store today. if it doesn't work out I'll try another brand. what are you using for a trim system?

how hard is it to pull the lever? I'm guessing I"ll have to let off the gas to pull it before a flip attempt correct?

Have you thought about trying a twist grip for the trim? Someone on here was talking about that a while back - seems like an interesting approach. I'm thinking that maybe a twist grip gear shifter would work (since a throttle would be on the wrong side).

I've tried the twist grip trim on a sit down. It was hard as hell/imposible to twist while under any load.

I say just dump the whole cable, lever idea and make a good CO2 trim system.

You can purchase a stainless steel Bimba air cylinder with a built in return spring for about 30 ~ 45 bucks. Then you will need a small paintball gun co2 canister with a 12 ~ 24 VDC Humphrey air valve for about 20 bucks. The rest would be easy, a 1/8" plastic air line with some compression fittings and a momentary switch with some wiring and some custom fabricated mounting brackets.
