i have a mate that makes titanium center flywheels for F1 mecury outboards and aftershowing him a rad one i had here he is going to start making a prototype one for a 701 he maks two types one with a spring steel center and another with a titanium center i will post a picture of the ones he makes the 701 will be similar in design let me know some feed back on what you think

What is the weight of the 2 mercury flywheels. And what about cost est? If the cost is down there they will sell like hot cakes even if the weight savings is minimal.

i will have to find out what the merc ones weigh but they are a bigger wheel as for cost we will have to make one first to see that but imo it should be better as it has a flex plate witch will help with any vibrations

If your going to that amount of work on building a modern flywheel...he needs to work on adding a digital pick-up boss on the outside of flywheel and bracket assembly to mount a coil pickup in cases to upgrade the the very bad designed stock Yamaha pulser pickup design! Like a more modern digtial ignitions that Kawasaki or Seadoo ignitions that come stock on them...This would now set him apart for all the rest! Goodbye MSD Enhancers, goodbye Advents, goodbye Vilders and goodbye Wax Racing, it would kill all them cdi boxes!!!!
Now welcome to the new digital computer ignitions of today! This is what we need not just another fancy stock working flywheel.

Titanium is very, very expensive. Why not use 6061 billet alum. it seems to be proven to withstand test of time?

I dont know if it would be goodbye it would be just reinvent
infact it would be so close to an sxr ignition system it would be easy to make


But in the meantime these flywheels would be interesting and i would be interested in one

Aluminum is lighter than Titanium. If you look at the lightweight ones we have available today and you change to titanium, the weight will only go up, unless he can make it significantly thinner. Right?

I think you're right and with all those allen bolts that would be just another problem waiting to happen.

as far as digital gos can we incorperate this in to the flywheel that works with a standard elec box?

The stator would have to change, as well. I suppose the CDI would change, also.

I would not think that an outboard would get anywhere near the shockloads of a PWC crank or flywheel though.

wouldnt the 90 degree direction change and gear reduction in the lower unit dampen alot of those loads? not to mention the long twisty driveshaft from the engine?

the flywheels look cool, the larger merc flywheels ive messed with were HEAVY stockers.

plus most of the time they dont load and unload like when skis cavitate.

you would have to put a lump on the inside of the flywheel to make a pickup work and then get a sensor that will replace the pulse sensor
you could then take theexciter coil out and just run the charge system
the cdi could run off the battery only

this setup would make for a very reliable cdi system because it had a reasonably constant power source

Aluminum is lighter than Titanium but it can be made much thinner especially if the p/u ran on outside like a 760 flywheel. A combo would be ideal, like ring gear and center from Titanium but the body in billet alum, is this poss?
