The rule I was told is that you pay sales tax based on where you take possession of the goods. That doesn't sound right unless they may have an instate sales office. For example, you order a TV from Circuit City online to be shipped to your house and they charge you sales tax.

in that case - you have to pay sales tax (on an internet order, for example) if the company has a retail outlet in your state.

some states are cracking down on mail order "tax free" sales.

technically, you (purchaser) are probably supposed to pay sales tax to your state tax office for a product you purchase out of state (if you did not pay tax on it at time of sale)

That's the way it is in TN. If said company has some sort of retail outlet or distribution center in TN, then we pay tax.

don't be surprised to see more states start cracking down and attemp to start collecting sales taxes on out of state purchases & shipments. I think many states are feeling a bit a pinch loosing that tax money to internet sales.

Now in TX, when you go to transfer a vehicle title, the state uses a "presumptive value" to decide how much sales tax you pay. So if you buy a car $5000 car for $500 - guess what value you pay taxes on.

The only way around it is to get a certified appraisal. (and of course, you have to pay for that out of pocket)

That is my understanding of it. If the company has any subsidiary or branch office in your state, then you pay the tax.

Yep, Yep, & Yep...

They take it out of your paycheck, they take it when you purchase, they take it from your social security....

Why is earning money a crime?

When you file state income taxes in Ohio, one question they ask is
"How much did you purchase over the internet this year" and they
take out Ohio sales tax based on what you report.

I don't think labor is taxable. If you got parts then they are but you make it sound like you supplied parts and they only did labor?
