Damn MSD enhancer!

After a closer look, the red wire had broke off. How the hell was it getting it's power, through the start switch????

This electrical box gets water in it all the time. I cleaned all the grounds and replaced some conectors. We'll see if this does it. My Kawi's never got water in the electrical box. This is a weak link from the Superjet, huh? I finally finished jetting this thing cause i had some fuel delivery issues and i dont need spark problems now. So far it sounds good on the trailer. I still dont know how it ran that whole time with a broken power wire.

gettting a new gasket is the best way to keep water out .I put on a new gasket everytime I open my ebox which isnt often because I use new gaskets .
but if your boat is filling up with enough water to reach your e box than a scupper and a couple of bilge pumps would help also .

Well, still got the same problem.

Looks like i'll have to get another enhancer. I guess it shorted itself out since it went so long with water in the electrical box. And who knows how long that red wire was off. It's still not starting on every try. It's still giving me the "stop switch" symptom. When i put it back together you hit the stop button once and it shut off.(like it's supposed too) But later on it went back to having to hold down the button to stop it. It's also not starting on the first try like it should.

So where should i buy it? Riva?

Did you clean the connection on stop switch, maybe you have 2 issues?

I have never had water in my elects on any of my SJ's in 6 years of riding. I think Yamaha has the best sealed systems out there.

there is SOME truth to that, but its not the complete truth.

I have ran stock CDI boxes in the elec box full of water and they have NOT failed.

so, the MSD lacks the durability of the STOCK CDI in a wet environment.

I drilled holes in the bottom of my box to allow the water to drain out.

The Enhancer is not the problem bro. Your second statement is. Water = :skull2: on electrical parts:banghead:

I bought all of mine cheap/used, the only one thats failed is the one that stayed wet for a long time.

and YES< I really did drill drain holes!

I open the screw cap and let it air out in there when the boats are on the trailer.

it works for me.

( freshwater only)

My MSD Enhancer is 10 years old bro. Never an issue, but it stays niceley tucked in a dry SJ waterbox with like 50 friggin screws in it. :Banane01:

Drilling holes in the bottom of the electrical box makes it like a "diving bell". Alls cool until it lays on its side or flips upside down....

Bad idea

Did you miss the part about removing the cap to let it dry when Im not riding it?

bad idea, whatever.

it WORKS for me.

look at all the MSD total loss units set up out in the open, they work fine!

all new ideas MUST BE BAD!

hahahahahaha

Yea, but then you know for sure pretty much that water goes in there and your box is exposed to moisture every use. Even though its drying out, the residues from the water (ie saltwater has salt, fresh has all kinda organisms and stuff) are still there. If you know your ebox is sealing (ie new gaskets) then I would leave it sealed so it doesnt have to be exposed at all. Sure you want that added protection, but its better to be easy on your equipment when possible.

thats part of the deal, I THOUGHT it was sealed when it didnt start and I pulled it apart and it was full of water.

this way I KNOW its dry.

Its been working for a year like this with ZERO issues.

Realistically, you should try to get that box sealed up. Like Hangtime mentioned earlier, perhaps a new gasket and some dielectric grease on those connections.
I've had similar electrical issues before, and wet components just adds to headache :frown: of keeping your boat running properly.

AhA! Every time there was a thread about dead Enhancers, mouthfulloflake would tell us how he has had them for years with no prob. Sounds like your luck ran out finally!

you are RIGHT Adam!

thats why I posted this thread in the first place!

haha, I love them, and I run one in both of my superjets, but now my spare is gone, and I no longer see them for sale for the $50 or so that I paid for each ofthe 3 that ive had.

I used them in Kawaskis for a while too with no problems.

basically, dont let them SIT in water and they will be ok.

the one I had go out, sat over the winter in a box FULL of water, im not suire how water got in and couldnt get OUT. thats when I drilled the drain holes.

I had grand visions of a filtered intake hose on one of the holes, and a vacume source to the engine on another hose, to keep fresh air in the elec box, but got lazy and forgot about that...

so its been just there with the drain holes, and me removing the big screw cap when I remember...

There has to be a reason the things go bad. Is it the water shorting it out?

Where should i buy the new one?

update!

that enhancer ( that I deem bad in this thread)
sat on a shelf in my garage up until about a month ago.

My buddy ( superx2) wanted to borrow one of mine for some testing.
so I grabbed that one, we hooked it up, and it worked.

I guess it dried out inside in those couple of years.

Oh, and as another update, I havent had to get backinside my E box at all since drilling those drain holes in it.

rock on MSD enhancer and E box drain holes!
