Plug wire FYI.

When I was in Daytona it was my first time running a new motor. It ran rather poorly and I couldnt figure out why, I assumed it was carburation. I did however notice that I had nice firing marks on one piston and the other was almost clean.

I know that most understand that the stock SJ plus wires have a tendency to go to ********e. The other day I found I had a bad terminal end on one of mine. I went ahead and cut the wire back a half inch to get a good piece of the electrode. When I did this I noticed there was some black soot on the electrode of that cylinder which I figured meant it was arching. When I grabbed the electrode it fell apart. I had to go back another inch to get a clean wire.

The thing sounds 100% cleaner now (its cold in chicago so no water).......night and day difference.

I guess my FYI here is that you should either switch to MSD wires or really be sure that you check these things well (even if you think cutting back an inch is enough). I would have been chasing this motor all season if I didnt catch that the wire was broken further back as well. ITS NOT A JOKE....THE STOCK WIRES SUCK.

They all break. As a group here we have been throug multiple different types of wires. We have probably had RD rewire 10 coils in the last year. Its always one of the 1st things I check when I have one running rough. Finally had to buy my own OHMS meter too. Worth every penny.

I had replaced my wires last year. In Daytona it was running rough, cutting out, ended up the epoxy I used to glue the new wires in softened up and they slid out of the coil. I plan on having a spare from now on. Wildman Wes saved my butt in Daytona by loaning me his spare.

BTW, I used Autozone universal restrictor wires, with filament instead of wire, I doubt they will break.

Buy a polaris 800rmk coil pn 4060229 6 ft of copper core wire, available at napa, and 2) TB05EMA NKG plug caps. the cost of all these parts is the same as the oem coil, but the wires are replaceable, unlike the SJ coil wires. Next time the wires break.........and they will, you just need to get more wire. :)

the polaris coil is pretty much a direct bolt in to your elec box

I guess I should have checked into this before selling my spare OEM coil.

How do you replace the wires? I saw the epoxy and thought there would be no way to secure the wires in there.

Anyone have pics?

What epoxy do you use to reseal?

Just buy an OEM coil from a Waverunner III or sumthing so the plug wires are longer and you get more life out of em. No matter what you do your coil is gonna go bad at some point if your riden in salt. I have a JSS coil in my ski that I only put in last July and it was kickin in and out for a little at daytona. it helps to put some di-electric grease on your terminals and all too.

just use JB weld it works fine. And make the wires like 32 to 36" long. Be carefull when drilling out old wire not to drill our, damage or bend the spike that new ones will push / screw into. Dig old ones out carefully. I watched RD (STINGRAY) do a few and would prefer he did them since he has the wore by the roll and has done so many anyways. PM Stingray if you want him to do yours, he is reasonable and can usually just exchange if you know the coil itself is good.

I did the same as Darin at the end of the season last year. I used superglue instead of epoxy and now am having second thoughts. I only put the superglue at the very top of the terminal so to avoid having a tough time taking them out a 2nd time if I had to.
