03 SXR taking on water

So I just Purchased an 03 SXR 800 off craigslist from and older guy and he said the thing has sat in storage for 8 years. He just got it running and rode it twice then his Girlfriend wanted a sit down to ride so he sold this to make some money. It needs a new primer pump but other than that it cranks right up and runs great. I did notice when I had it sitting on the trailer before I launched it the ski had already started taking on water. I pulled it out let it drain went for a ride came back and there was a little water in the hull. I let it sit on the beach for like 2 minutes and it took on another inch or two of water. when I pulled the ski out I noticed water coming from the exhaust. when I got home I tilted the trailer up and most all of the water exited from the exhaust. Is there a seal there that I can replace or do you guys have any other ideas of what may be going on? Thanks in advance for any help.

Here’s a couple pictures of the ski. It’s already got an upgraded impeller intake and some other small things. The motors stock other than k&n air filters.

Did some investigating. Found a hole in the exhaust. Any ideas to patch this? How hard is it to replace that pipe there?

Hard to tell from the photo, I can't see a hole in the exhaust.

You can remove the exhaust flange/exit and get a better look.

Yes I will be doing that this afternoon, I will post up for ideas. I was thinking of finding an piece of pipe to push in to try and cover the holes then treat it with some high heat silicone. Unless pulling the pipe isnt to hard to have it welded up but I dont think that will be an easy task

Their is suppose to be water in the exhaust.
Are you saying you think water is leaking in where the exhaust tube meets the hull?
You cannot just change the exhaust tube without major work. Used brake clean and clean the area well and see what it looks like.

It’s hard to tell but I marked the photo showing where the hole is and the water is coming from out of the hull. Sorry for the bad picture.

1st. Fill Engine bay with water from a hose. See if water starts leaking out of the exhaust.
2nd. That part of the exhaust is just the outlet / deflector. 1559140232820.png
It just bolts on to the exhaust flange.
3rd. Be sure the oring on the hull drain is not cracked.
4th. Inside the engine bay is the bilge, be sure the hose is not laying down, it should make a loop up the bulkhead and not laying down, if it is laying down, then water will backflow inside the hull. 1559140383123.png
Be sure the exhaust outlet hose is connected. I doubt this is where water is coming in, the pipe should make a bend upward inside the hull keeping water from flowing into the hull.

Awesome I will Check the Bilge Hoses today as well.

JC Superjet Thanks for the response. Do you think that stuff will hold up? I have never heard of DevCon a quick research makes me seem like it may hold up better than JB Weld. Do you know if the pipe gets that hot back there? Have you known anyone to have this kind of issue before?

remove the rubber outlet.you can then remove the flange, remove the rivet holding it to the pipe in the hull and pry it out gently.you can then access the pipe better and check for a hole.
the flange can be re siliconed in place.

Took the outlet off and took better pictures. I filled the hull up with water and saw the water coming from the hole you see here. There is no longer a question as to where the water is coming from, I’m trying to find a solution to fixing the hole. My plan is to clean and sand the interior of the pipe and get some exhaust pipe. I need 2 1/4” od and about 3” long to insert in the tail pipe then jb weld the front and back of the insert to the tail pipe and pray for no other issues. If any one has experienced this and made a reliable fix I would love to hear what has worked. Thanks for all replies

Was this a Saltwater boat?

It must have been a salt water boat, the inside of the Hull was so clean, it was my mistake I guess assuming it hadn’t been in the salt. Aluminum putty patch as well is probably a good idea in combination.

The exhaust side of the SXR never really drains. I have a Versi plug on my SXR, and I know water gets trapped on the exhaust side. I have researched putting a smaller versi plug under the exhaust flange(cutting into the flange), so water doesn't sit on that side. SXRs can hold quite a bit of water, since the siphon is sitting right behind the engine not at the back of the ski.

They probably flushed the ski properly, but never got that last bit a salt water sitting on that side.

Update, I made my repair and rode the ski yesterday. The repair seeded to work great! There was a little water that made it in but seems to be a normal amount. I did just get one of those duck bill scupper things so I’ll be putting that on.
