So....another Squarenose buildup thread.

I pieced this ski together a bit more than a year ago. I had already built my Roundnose and was looking for a second ski.
I bought the Hull from boardmember Talsivar. I purchased the entire rest of the ski - minus hull - from the whore. (Butch)

It served me well for the past year. It is officially my wife's ski, and I use it as backup on occasion. Mind you, it has it's drawbacks.
The pole is stock length That plain sucks.
The motor is a bonestock 650 - even a stock exhaust.
The wear ring has a severe swelling issue that I just didn't fix last year. Resulting in sparks in the pump whenever it ran in the driveway.:biggthumpup:

I decided to make this ski a bit better this off-season. So, I started with the obvious. I cut out the current footholds (24/7's they're great) and cut some more of the back out so I could defoam.
It was plenty wet, particularly by the bond line.

Here's some pics:
1st one is the ski as we used it last year. It's in the middle on the trailer. Btw, I got the trailer from Talsivar, too. Bout a year before the hull, though.
Next are three pictures of the hull after surgery. Note the crack in the hull bottom. I knew about this when I got the hull, but was too lazy to fix it "right" last year. So, I just put 5200 in it. :biggthumpup:

Well....reinforcing it is the current order of business. It will also be sporting a stock FX-1 pole. Should be a bit shorter than the stocker squarenose pole.
It will not have a scupper. I will install 2 500GPH or 750GPH bilge pumps and make sure it's sealed well.
The motor will get Matt_E's special porting :biggthumpup: and a Coffman sizzler pipe. I am also putting on a new wear ring, a Blowsion pump cone, and a shaved stock head.
Basically, the engine will be as beefed up as possible while keeping it as stock as possible.

Oh yeah, I am going to paint it. Pink. :crying: :crying: :crying:

Reinforcing the hull was one of the things that had to get done.
I ground off the ribs and needed to fill in the bondline to make for a smooth surface for the glass.
On one side, I used thickened epoxy on one side, and foam on the other.

The first three pictures are of the foam in the bond line. I am going to tear it back out of the rear bondlines. I didn't think that one through....I said I had some good leaks in there, so why foam it? I'll dig it back out and seal it with 5200.
Fourth picture is the epoxy in the bondline.
Last picture is the bilge properly prepared for glass. This involved roughing up all surfaces, grinding off the gelcoat of the topdeck (inside) and making sure everything is a smooth transition.

Defoam looks pretty clean and not dusty, did you use a wirewheel or chemicals?

I dug out big chunks with a knife and screw driver. I enjoy that for some reason. After that, wire wheel only.

Grinding on the hull is dusty business. :biggthumpup:

I used pretty beefy glass mat for the side reinforcement. It's chopped mat on the bottom and biaxial cloth on top. It's thick and pretty strong.
I first used thin strips to reinforce under the hood lip.
Once that was cured, the sides were next. My technique:
I brush epoxy on the entire surface.
Then I put the glass down. I put extra epoxy on top only at the edges.
I then use a heat gun to get the epoxy very liquid (it's cold out).
I use a fiberglass roller to get that glass squeezed to the hull surface good. That, in combination with the heat gun, really gets the glass to absorb as much epoxy as possible. This ensures that I use as little epoxy as possible with this wet layup method. Remember, you want the glass saturated, but not oversaturated. The first side got a bit too much resin, but the second side turned out perfect.

Nothing to special...home porting, pipe, head.

I rode a B-Piped 650 last year that amazed me. The power was awesome. The stock 650 cylinder has port match that is worlds better than the regular 61x stuff.

Good luck with the build, looks like its coming along well so far. It's nice to see a build that's not going to cost a fortune.

I'm very curious to hear your impressions of that pipe/motor combo. It's probably something I'll be looking at later on this year. (Interesting comments on the B Piped 650 by the way.)

If I can find the time tonight, I will tear out the foam I poured in the rear bondline, grind some of the green glue flat, and lather a nice thick bead of 5200 in there. If that goes well, I should be able to lay glass right over it.
