Where to start

Hey everyone,
I am going to swap my old 650 out of my SN SJ for a 701. I have never ridden a SN with a 701 swap and I was wondering what you guys recommend. I ride mostly flat water and I am looking for more power to expand my freestyle tricks. I am planning to tear down the 701 and freshen it up. While I'm in there, what should I do? Just a port and polish or a big bore kit, or... I want the new motor to be very reliable and I didn't know if doing a big bore destroys the reliability factor and since I'm not doing competitions it wasn't worth it. Also, any recommendations on sponsons?

Are you riding fresh water or ocean? Have it ported by CPT @Nuklear6 he is out of Jersey and does great work. Put on a high comp head like the ada head with 35cc domes. (185psi compression) Put in a lower pitched impeller like a concord 13/15, or 9/15 hooker, and a factory bpipe or coffman sizzler.

Thanks, I have always ridden in freshwater. My buddies and I were discussing trying salt water next year but if we do, it would be like twice a year max.

So don't bother with a big bore?

I have a Coffman exhaust right now on my 650. I don't know what model. From my understanding, I can reuse it with a little porting and drill out the bolt holes? Is that worth it or should I just sell this one?

That pipe will work perfect! It is what I am running on my 760. You will want to open it up to 48mm and port match the manifold to the exhaust ports on your 701 though. The biggest thing that will help will be to cut open your tray and take out all of the wet foam. Then replace it with the foam you get in sheets at home depot. You can check out the build thread in my sig for a basic idea of that.

Thanks, I browsed through it but I'll have to take a deeper look into it. I really don't know what has been touched on my SN and what is original. I don't know anyone else that owns one so I don't know what to compare it to. I'll have to see what foam is in the SN right now. I know when I pull the plug, I have never had water come out ever. I believe it has a Solas prop right now but I don't know anything else about the standup besides the fact it has footholds.

If it has footholds and a plug then it has probably already been done. Impeller is probably a solas 14-17. It will work well with the 701.

If any superjet has a drain at the back it isn't stock. It's almost Def been defoamed and then glassed and refoamed to add the drain. Only problem is too many people use the 2 part foam that is similar to stock and is not completely closed cell and will hold water even if a drain is present. @Quinc Is correct closed cell foundation insulation foam is a great option.

Thanks

Thanks for all your help, I feel really stupid asking these questions, but like I said I don't know anyone else that owns one and I have not ran into anyone else that does. I will have to look after work today to see if it is closed or open called foam inside.

How about sponsons, is that something I should get into?

I'm going to rejet the carbs after I do the 701 swap. I'll have to see what prop I have right now. I was told it is a Solas. Would it be stamped with the pitch size?

U said carb(s) u goin 62t case?
There are tons of "freeride props" of all different pitches..point being strong low to mid range rpm..thats whatcha want

To be honest, I'm still trying to decide what I am going to do motor wise. I found a couple of complete 62t couches in the area within my price range. I'm still researching what I should do.

My thoughts so far are to buy a complete 62t couch, buy a 61x cylinder and port and polish it, use the 62t ebox for the rev limiter, use my current exhaust and follow what quinc said to do with porting it. Quinc also gave me a suggestion for a head so I'll probably follow that also.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do for intake, reeds, carbs, cooling system (I have one pisser right now), flywheel, and if the case should be modded.

Sponsons are going to help if you are going to race or ride in the ocean. If you want to cruise around the lake and do tricks, they are going to be of little to no benefit.

If you can find a 760 couch motor for the right price I would go that route. You will be able to get more power out of it for less money.
Stock intake is fine
Stock reeds are fine
Stock carbs dual 38's with 62t or dual 44's off a 760 will work fine
Your current 650 electronics will work with the 701, only thing I would change is the CDI. The 650 has a lower rev limit.

Impeller will be stamped on the side with the pitch and brand. You will might have to remove your pump to see it though.

Ok cool, I read somewhere that sponsons would help with freestyle tricks and when you turn quick.

As for the 760 I have been reading to stay away from them because they lack low end power, which is why I was going to the 62t case and 61x cylinder route.

Send the 760 to Chuck in post #8 and it will make significantly more low end power then the 62t/61x. :)
