Tigercraft Aquabot V2 build

Here is a thread of my Tigercraft Aquabot build. Let me start off by freely admitting I’m a noob. But, I’m trying to share what I learn as I go. Keep in mind that I’ve been riding about a year and a half and surf riding about 9 months. This is my first aftermarket hull and my experience has mostly been on old SN superjets.

I ordered the hull from Tony (Tigercraft) back in Aug 13 and got delivery in Jan. To be fair though, I did tell him I wasn’t in a hurry. So back in Aug, I emailed Tony several times but he always wanted to talk on the phone instead. That was fine. He spent a lot of time with me on the phone and was pretty helpful. He offered me a lot of options that being a noob I really didn’t know what I should ask for. I also told him I was interested in as basic a hull as possible because I’m cheap (broke) and needed to keep costs down. So turf, decals, special colors, adjustable footholds, and a few other options were deleted. He was helpful and pretty accommodating about that aspect. Price was the main thing that led me to this hull. I did read everything I could find (at the time there wasn’t much) but there was no one else in the $3500 price range. Not sure what he is pricing now, this was when he had “introductory pricing” going.

So we agreed on the options and I sent him an email stating so just because I have read some horror stories about A/M hull manufacturers. I wasn’t comfortable sending half the money up front with nothing written down. He responded to the email, sent me his address and I sent him a cashiers check for half the price. He let me know when he received the check and then I didn’t hear from him for a while. Like I said, he sometimes isn’t very good with his emails but every time I called, he talked with me as long as I wanted. I wasn’t aware that about Nov, he retooled and came out with the V2s. I saw it on facebook and called about it because I was curious. He told me I was getting a V2. Cool deal. We agreed on a hull before there was a V2 so I couldn’t complain if he sent me a V1. Then in Dec, I called and he told me my hull was done. Since we were both going to Daytona, we agreed I’d just pick it up there. Saved me $400 on the hull shipping costs! And he used it as one of his displays so good for us both I think. Sure enough, I got to Daytona and there it was! I was pretty excited.

OK so all those folks that gripe about not hearing from Tigercraft, I had a little of that experience but it really wasn’t that bad. And the fact that I didn’t have money for a motor yet, I really wasn’t in a hurry. I was excited and wanted it, but wouldn’t be building it until Feb anyway. So what I’m saying is, I’ve had better customer service but when pressed he gives what he says he is going to. I’ve read a lot worse about some other A/M hull manufacturers. And when all is said and done, I told him I wasn’t in a hurry and I got a pretty cool hull for a price that is in my budget.

now let me see if I can figure out how to upload movies and pictures….

I forgot to mention earlier, I’m trying to have two boats in one with this ski, I love going to ride the surf but I live on a small lake and 80% of my riding is there. So I’m trying to build a flatwater freestyle boat that I can beat up in the surf. More accurately probably is a surf boat that is light enough I can flatwater freestyle with. Oh and I’m trying to do this as cheap as I can.

gas tank, water box, pump video coming tomorrow!

Congrats on the hull looking forward to see pictures, can't wait till I get mine
Thanks crazy4sand! Not to give away the punchline of my build here but I really like the hull. It is best described as nimble I think. I highly recommend getting the inset front foothold. I wish I would have and now I have to do some glassing on my brand new hull!

I had all kinds of great paint job ideas but when I got it home, I just wanted to start building it. My 10 year old son said the plain white looked like a stormtrooper so we kind went with a "Imperial" theme. Pretty simple and got me to building it quick. I figure I'll probably destroy the turf this summer so maybe paint next winter…
Working on getting more pics and vids up.

Cool build...like the videos

My suggestion would be to rotate the brass fittings on the pump so they point towards the hull so you can just a straight line then there is no worries about kinks and would look cleaner

I did order the recessed front foot hold my self, and my build is a surf layup as well but i do still plan on riding mostly flat water,

Yeah I agree that looks a lot cleaner and then you don't have kink issues. I was trying that and it was kicking my butt trying to get the heavy hose on the fitting. I might go back to that though when I change my ride plate. Thanks for the suggestion!

line the hose up and push them on when you push the pump in. Much easier than trying to get them on afterwards.

The hull came with nothing in the tray area (edit: I asked for it that way, see beginning post and later post). That made me a little nervous though, I want some emergency flotation in there. The tray area is so small it probably would never be enough to float a fully swamped boat but I just couldn’t go with nothing. Since the tray is already built, I saw two options, expanding foam or ping pong balls. I did a little research on the ping pong balls and that’s what I decided to use. I didn’t use standard cellulose balls. I used these cheap 38 mm practice balls. They are made of plastic, don’t ignite like the cellulose ones, are cheaper and lighter. I ordered them from www.zymetrical.com. I soaked one in fuel for 2 weeks just as a test and it wasn’t affected so I’m feeling pretty good them. Basically, I drilled a 40mm hole in the bulkhead and stuffed as many in as I could. I fit in about 450 (edit: cost about $65). Then I made a small square patch to cover the hole and 3M 5200 and 4 screws and I’m done. Here is a little video of how I did that part.

Nice video, is it common for the aquabots to not have foam?
I'm not sure what the numbers are (foamed vs not foamed). When talking to him on the phone it sounded common for them not to be foamed but please remember, I left off every option I could to keep this cheap. I got a little time but no money! So it was requested that way. As Crazy4sand mentioned, you can get them filled. Sorry, don't remember the cost differential other than I thought it was more then the price of materials.

NOT TRYING TO MISREPRESENT THE PRODUCT OR TIGERCRAFT HERE! didn't mean to sound like the hull just came with nothing and thats all there is. I asked Tigercraft to leave out anything that I thought I could do myself that didn't require cutting up the hull! In retrospect, there are a couple of things (front foot hold being the main thing) that I should have ordered on the hull. I think Tigercraft's flexibility in doing whatever you ask for is noteworthy here. I haven't worked with any other A/M hull guys though and maybe that is common? I am glad I got the ball drains on it although that is minor to add. It was really easy to add the drain line through the tray area. I did find out recently that those ball drains are from 701 industries. Apologies that I don't have a good picture of who has a business relationship/partnership with who. I'm finding out all the time about this guy doesn't like that guy or this company is down the street from that company and uses all their stuff etc. Not saying Tigercraft is tied to 701 Industries but seems they have some kind of link.

also a reminder here that there was a bunch of options I really didn't know what were. The front lip for example, I don't remember talking about that but I have seen other aquabots that have a different front lip from mine. Maybe personal customization, I just don't know. I am happy with the front lip on mine though. Also glad I didn't get custom paint or turf on it. It is straight white gelcoat and the gelcoat is really nice. They will send you one with the tray already turfed but I kind of like the option of doing it myself and doing it how I want it.

I'll also admit I probably have cost myself $ in leaving stuff off in an effort to keep things cheap. I bought an old SN (ran when I bought it) that I didn't use nearly as much stuff off of it as I thought. Probably cost more than it was worth for my purposes. Up side is now I have an old hull to play with.
