Another Freeride RN Build

I posted picks on the Swamp Rats riding group thread, but thought I would get this out for all to see.

This is the ski I have been planning/building since last Daytona freeride, and plan to have it ready for this years freeride.

2006 Hull
WF Footholds
WF 4 hold hood
WF nose piece
WF Chin Pad
WF Carbon Fiber ride plate
single X-metal Scupper
X-metal side Exhaust
X-metal -4 pole
x-metal turnplate
UMI Steering
85.5 ported Big Bore with Kawi flattop pistons
Factory B-pipe
Single Mikuni 48 carb
MSD Enhanser
13/17 solas prop
CATS trim system
x-metal reinforced hood hooks
x-metal hood hook keepers
Grey Hydro-turf

The bond line was filled with 2:1 epoxy mixed with milled fibers to a thick paste.

The negative recesses under the front top deck were filled with foam. Then the 11"x5" area under the handle pole bracket was reinforced with 4 layers of 1208 biaxial.

Then the sides and under the the front top deck area were covered with 1 layer of 1208 biaxial and one layer of 10.5 oz Carbon Fiber. The bottom of the hull and the rear bulkhead were covered with one layer of 10.5 oz Carbon fiber.

I then tipped the ski over, and filled in the bondline with resin mixed with milled fibers to seal the rear foam.

Once the reinforcing was done, the hull wieghed in at 118.5 pounds.

I asked Steve (Watercraft Factory) to make me a Pancake proof four hold hood (second one made), in black gel coat, that would be indestructible. I then took the hood to my body man who used black primer underneath, and matched the Yamaha factory color perfectly.

The black gel coat and primer was used on the hood and nose piece so that chips to the paint, which are inevitable with my fat arse hood tricks, would not be too visible.

My Wife has most of the pictures on her computer, but I will see if I can go back on upload the progress pics tonight.

I do have to give a big thanks to Steve at the Watercraft Factory and Paul at exotics signs for all their help! :woot: :woot: :woot:

that paint is sick, looks like jason stoyers just black instead of green.

I guess it does, never really noticed much. Too bad I can't ride like Jason.:banghead:

As far as I know, this is the only ski that has the graphics kit on it, as the person that the kit was developed for has not had them put on yet.:dunno:

A photo under the nose after the carbon has been laid and the fuel filler cap cut out.

Since this was a brand new hull that had never been in the water, I decided to keep the fuel filler tube in, but block it off. It will have a billet cap on it, and hold my registration and whistle....

To the left of the photo, you can just see a little bot of the bond line that was filled in.

very nice:biggthumpup:

So did you have to paint the bottom of the hull or is that just black decals on the white hull?

If they are decals how does Exotic Signs get them to match the paint so well?

I was thinking about doing something like that on my Yamaha Blue 03 with white hull one day. I just want to make sure the blue decals on the bottom of the hull would match the topdeck.

Some pictures of laying down the 1208 biaxial and carbon fiber on the sides of the bilge.

The carbon fiber was laid down directly on top of a tacky fiberglass layer to make sure of a good chemical bond.

They are black decals on the white hull.

How Paul does it, I do not know, but Paul installed the graphics for a very reasonable price, plus a little advertising space on the ski....

Picture of the reinforced bulkhead.

The bottom of the hull and bulkhead really do not need to be reinforced, but I liked the look of the carbon so I deceided to go for it.

It would be near impossible to get around all the little hull fittings (posts), intermediate housing and engine mounts with carbon, so I got as close as I could and left the rest to Captain Krylon.:Banane01:

The white square on the bulkhead will be painted tomorrow for the installation of the intermediate housing on Wednesday.

Once the ski is together, it will be hard to tell that any post are painted.

If you dont mind me asking what did Paul charge you for the decals installed?

I'm going to be in Ft. Lauderdale for Christmas and I was thinking about bringing the ski. I might be able to talk someone into getting me a decal set for xmas.:sneaky:
