Custom/Hybrid Custom hull owners, how did registration/titling work?

Location

It all depends on the states regulations. From my personal experience nj seeks pretty simple an inspection of the craft as far as I'm aware. Pa however is strict on the"tax" when you add up the # of buying a hull from. Builder with a reciept and pump and driveline exc at 6% can make the cost of getting a ski registered can get more expensive than what people feel is fair .

It's like MattE said above, it depends on each individual agent at each office. As far as I know I'm the only one to have to jump the hoop I did and it was because one agent had it in her head that it was one way. I went out of my way to do her job for her this time and make it obvious so hopefully she just drops a stamp on the new one and gets it done.

As it was, I had to fudge some papers since the guy who I bought my hull off didn't provide me with any documentation whatsoever with my hull. Partly my fault because I drove 18 hrs thru the night and was exhausted when I arrived at his house and forgot to get a bill of sale and grab the title. He said he would send it but it's been over two months now and I'm tired of chasing him for a bastardized title I really didn't want anyways.

Can you explain " bastardized title"? Did the previous owner rob a HIN from a diffrent ski to register it?

Yes, and it looks nothing like a 91 SN Superjet; Nor would the police or insurance understand why I'm freaking out about losing a ski that has a book value of $500.

It's worth a phone call to your states DMV, or in Pennsylvania it's handled through fish and boat, and snowmobiles are through DNR. They can't keep it all in one place lol. I was surprised to learn the trouble I could save myself if I had a title from something else. Otherwise they wanted invoices for every last but and bolt. That adds up quick. Make a call and ask, then you will know exactly what you need to have in order to make it happen quickly and not give them any issues to hold up the process.

8 months and NY is finally understanding the laws thanks to Jordan. Whizzed through DMV in 20 mins. 2013 Rickter FR2, titled as NEW. Thanks again to the coast guard for setting NY straight. Its a law that they have to provide you with a HIN #.

this is why i wouldnt register it as a superjet if i had insurance. you have a $10k + ski and you register it as some beater ski from 1995. then you insure that ski, and you sink it. you can show them receipts for motor and pump stuff but you'll lose money on your hull. i drove up to a BassPro Shop here where they have monthly boat inspections. told them i built it, went on and on about how i did it (just so i could kinda lose him and he wouldnt know what i was talking about) then he kinda looked at me and raised his eyebrows and said "ok" handed me a sheet of paper to fill out and gave me my 2 HIN stickers right there on the spot.

It used to be super easy in florida, but I tried to register new ski yesterday and they changed the rules here. Fish and wildlife officer needs to come out and inspect it, then submit paperwork, wait....

after talking with my DMV I finally found this form and this is how I managed to get my ski registered and after reading through all the coastguard stuff this seems to be the correct form it is pretty hard for them to argue with it since it is the exact form the coast guard says a vessel needs to obtain a title. so either have the builder fill the form out and have it all signed and notarized or if you are the one that built it you can fill it out just check the boxes that apply.
heres the form:
