Super Jet Steering cable compression fitting

Hi Folks,

Working on one of my hulls this afternoon and noticed after pulling the steering cable out that the steering compression fitting is loose from the hull. Several threads can be seen between the hex part of the fitting and the hull. I cannot get it to tighten back up and I can not thread it out all the way either as it just spins loosely either way. What is this threaded into and what is the best way to remedy this sitch? already removed the steering cable for replacement.

Of course that is another issue, any tricks to getting a new cable through there?

Thanks,
hbski

I don't know how the yamaha setup is. I have only had Kawi fittings apart. On the Kawi, the fitting is glued to the hull, and tightened down with a nut. Then, the cap is placed over this to compress the o-ring on the steering cable. If you break the fitting free, (still talking about Kawi), you have to cut open the tray, remove the fitting, clean it, and reglue it back in. I do not know of any other way to fix this when it is damaged.

I think the yamaha ones are plastic. THey may be installed differently. The Kawi ones are brass. I soaked mine in chem dip and they came out like new.

Thanks for the reply, but on the SN it is definitely not glued to the hull. It appears to be a bulkhead fitting with a rubber washer to seal against the hull.

I did see in a SN build thread that there appears to be a piece of bent (molded) pvc between the engine compartment and the rear exit where the compression fitting is, but no view rearward to see what is going on at this fitting.

Anyone else have any insight?

Surely someone has opened their tray and seen this connection, or someone has one open right now and can chime in.

I need to figure out if there is a minimally invasive way to tighten this fitting back up to the hull.

Thanks,

On the inside of the tray there is a rubber washer and plastic nut. There is no way to tighten it without cutting into the tray however. I would reinstall new cable first, then before final tightening, use 5200 all around the fitting and spin it to get full coverage.

Thanks Chris.

As I suspected a bulkhead fitting! So I assume the PVC pipe that runs from here up through the bulkhead into the engine compartment just sits around the end of the fitting and doesn't really attach to it, correct?

You are correct, or at least that is how mine was when I removed the tray. Bulkhead fitting with a pvc tube glued around the threads...horrible design if you ask me.
When I rebuilt mine I used larger diameter PVC tube and glued in a insert into the end of PVC that accepted the treads from the steering cable fitting that way when I tightened down the fitting from the outside it pulled everything tight. I can even swap out those steering bulkhead fittings without ever having to cut tray out.
I could take pictures and show you what I did if interested.

I understand what you did, but if it's not any trouble to throw up a pic or two, yeah, that's be great
