Blaster b1 phantom starting

Okay, Just To Start Off I Am New To X-h20 BuT Have Been RidinG For 2 Years. I Currently Have A 93 Squarenose And A 93 B1. I Had A Couple Kawasakis But Got Tired Of Sitting On The Sidelines So Switched To Yamaha And Haven't Looked Back..
Anyway, I Started My Blaster The Other DaY (Currently Has 650 From My Sn) After A Ride And The Starter Got Stuck On.. Cranking Like Crazy. Pulled ThE Lanyard, Hit The Stop Button.. Nothing. it wouldn't stop until I disconnected the battery. through process of elimination we determined that It must have been a faulty relay. bought a new relay at a local shop and the ski fired up perfect.. took it out for a couple test runs and it worked fine. on the third run I figured I was golden but it will ended up happening again about 3 miles up the river..
has anyone ever had this happen? or have any ideas on what it could be? the relay is brand new so it can't be that Be that. Any Info Would Be Greatly Appreciated. Dont Want To Be Up :):):):) Creek With A Turd For A Paddle.

Lol i had it happen to my old camaro i built the car started and was running while the starter was still trying to start the car. Anyways u got a bad starter, either rebuild it or just replace it.

Disconnect the white plug on the start stop switch next time it does it and see if it goes away.

My guess is corrosion on the start circuit arcing out and making a contact.

thanks for the input! It is greatly appreciated. however, I don't think it is the starter because It cranks over fine. I disconnected the white plug on the start/stop when it happened. No dice. that is what led me to believe it was the relay. I should also note that my e box is so clean that you could eat off of it. no corrosion or rust of any sort, I don't think this ski has ever seen salt water. do you guys have any other ideas? I have another complete e box that I'm going to swap in for now just so I can ride.

You mean the inside of the ebox is verified clean and free of corrosion? Or are you talking about the outside?

By the way, there are only two possible sources for the phantom start:
  • Relay (no good way to test that, just replace. It's cheap enough)
  • Switch or harness to switch inside ebox

The Inside Is Clean, Looks Brand New. Just Swapped The Relay With ANew One And It Worked Right For Awhile But Then Did The Same Thing Again.. Guess Ill Be Checking ThaT Switch And Harness When I Pull It Apart Again. Thanks Man!

Yeah i did, and iits ur starter it will start just fine but its just worn out inside rebuild it or replace. Ive had the same issue and installed a new staryer and all was well. Good luck

There is no failure mode of the starter motor that would cause it to do that. What's more likely: your old starter was worn out and drew a lot of current. This can cause the relay to overheat and temporarily weld itself into the closed position.
So while a new starter "fixes" the issue, the relay still should not do that.

Ok. He's my buddy.

i have disconnected the wire from the plug coming from the ebox. It's not attached in any way to the switch.

we have put a brand new starter relay in it. The ebox is the cleanest I have ever seen.

Im at a loss also. I'm going to replace the entire ebox and stator tomorrow.

The stator has zero to do with the starter, nor does the rest of the box. Relay, switch, or wiring between the two.
If its starting when it shouldn't, the relay is conducting when it should not. So either the main contractors in the relay are inadvertently making contact or the auxiliary contacts are being activated. Replacing stator and ebox makes as much sense as replacing the pump.

check the ebox side of the switch wires, red and brown?(i think) are the colors for the start circuit. Maybe they are pinched somewhere and making contact which will activate the solenoid. You have something going on and it should be fairly simple to figure out.

My next step would be to pull all the components out of the ebox housing and inspect them very closely before replacing parts that dont need to be changed.

Check your start stop switch. i had this happen once with an old switch... i replaced and was good to go... While i was at it i redid the connectors and hard wired them and shrunk wrap it to ensure perfect uninterrupted connection

It not the switch.

I have replaced 2 solenoids. the wires ARENT TOUCHING.

Im not an idiot. I know the stator and ebox doont start the ski. At this point nothing else has worked. Nothing is touching. Nothing is corroded. Nothing is shorting. We have had the ebox outside the ski with it open and it still does this. The grounds are great, contacts all good, everything is greased fuse is good. Starter cranks perfect, relay works as it should short of being stuck.

I plan on pulling the ebox, swapping it all, giving my buddy a running ski, and then diagnosing with it out of the ski. At this point that is about all I can think of to do. I fully understand the simple system of starting on this ski, but it is mind boggling after everything we have done.

Yes, with a ohmeter and fsm. i plan on Testing every single piece once I get it out of the ski.

After trying so many times, and it not working and almost frying the ski, Im not very willing to put it back in. But if my buddy wants to I will.

I appreciate the ideas.

it may be the connector from the ss switch to the ebox
pull it apart and make sure there is no arcing going on in the socket

I second this....and please let us know what you end up doing to fix it.

Have you check out the ss connections from ebox to ss. I would replace them boyer, ocdsolutions sells the correct yami (jap) connectors to match oem

This was my guess earlier and still is. Inside the white plug probably has corrosion on the ebox side. Or a wire is pinched and touching.

sorry but THE CONNECTOR TO THE EBOX IS CUT OFF, ITS JUST THE WIRES, I HAVE COMPLETELY ELIMINATED THE PLUG OR THE SWITCH AS BEING THE PROBLEM

Im seriously not trying to be rude, I understand how hard it is to convery info, and grasp it all with ultiple posts from dif people
