SX/SXi/SXi Pro Many Questions! Pole Cutting SXI 750, reinforcing, waterbox

Hello All,

I recently purchased my first stand up from my buddy. Brand new motor build one size over, new crank, new aluminum cradle (light!), carb rebuild, etc. The boat will have plenty of power down low for me to eventually learn to barrel roll and back flip.

I need to cut the pole and would like to know how you decide how much of the pole to cut. I'm 5'7 175lbs; I was thinking a 3 in cut would be best. My buddies brother who is also a good friend who i will be riding with cut his super jet pole 2.5in, I'm very comfortable on his but i know the SXi is heavier, so i think the .5in will help counter that a bit. Any input as to how this is determined will help, do you know?

Also, if I want to practice back flipping and barrel roles should i reinforce the hull/ If so how do i go about doing this and what material, and where do you reinforce? Will this add extra weight in doing so?

The ski has plenty of power down low has a massive carb set up, and it is the big pin motor. I just want to make sure everything else is set up properly for me to achieve my goal.

Iv'e also been deciding weather or not to put a water box in, the stock one is nasty looking; will this hurt me in hopes of achieving my goal of back flipping or barrel rolling by loosing low end power? Ski currently has a dual exhaust set up.

Thanks for reading.

having a Kawasaki will hurt you in your hope of a BF or BR
a new waterbox will not help either

x2 sorry bro, actually i take it back. in the surf sure you can pull it off. flatwater, well that will be much harder. not impossible but just way harder than it needs to be. as far as cutting the pole down, again not a good choice. you would be better off buying and aftermarket pole. but I suppose if you are deadset on doing it anyway its possible, but just know that when/if it breaks you will likely be replacing the steering and throttle cables.

I have repaired my sxr pole where it cracked at the bottom and am just now putting time in to see how long it will hold. I am also not trying to roll or flip so I have a feeling it will last 100x longer then yours will.

take some time and do some internet searches on fiberglass and repair procedures and you will have a good starting point. read around the forums and you can prob find some pole repairs to give you an idea of how they were done. RRP, dales, umi and a/c all have a replacement for your ski.

Because if you own a Yamaha like a lot of others you don't like Kawasaki's

Now that's about as close to the truth as it gets lol

Seriously though, kawi's are going to be harder to flatwater flip and roll bc of several things... The pumps are less efficient, engines don't have the same low end hit and they dont ride as light.
This topic will never stop and there is no definitive answer. Just tons of opinions, I'm positive my ski is completely capible of a flatwater roll with its current setup. I'm just nowhere close in skill to pull it off. If I would have started on a SJ and invested the same amount of time and money into it I would be killing rolls by now. I'm just not ready to give into the yam-wagon.
That being said. Make sure your pump is setup right, upgrade to a A/M pole (stock pole is garbage and will be even worse if you cut it up) reinforce the hull around the pole bracket and nose area, if your hood is stock you'll also want to cut the weight out of it and reinforce it too. Use 12oz cloth and epoxy resin from uscomposites.com.
the waterbox isn't really that important, you won't gain anything but noise if you don't have one. I assume your running a FP limited pipe, if not look for one, they are the best way to go. If you have a aluminum water box you can cut it open and take out the baffles and weld it back up. If its a fiberglass one you'll prob be better off getting a sxi stocker or a a/m before yours blows out. You'll be amazed at how many things will start breaking when you start trying to roll it.

who said anything about sj? I was just answering his question. feel free to provide links to all the flatwater riders who are rolling and flipping on kawis. or even being helpful in any way.

its like anything else, you work with what you have. and to that end I was helping as best I could. I didnt say it was not possible, Mark Gomez was doing it on a 550. eventually he moved on to a sj.

kawis are better suited to racing. its not about what ski is better it about the right tool for the job. I still think he should continue moving forward. when his skills are better and he gets a ski better suited to his riding needs his level of riding will most likely take a huge step forward.
