I need to get one. Ever since I started running an aftermarket hood, I have not had a fire extinguisher

when i ran an extinguisher on my old hull i modified it for the stock square nose extingisure setup. if anyone wants to get an extinguisher use the square setup! do not risk losing your engine if the extingisure desides to blast. the only reason i do not run it now is becuase it is to heavy and i am already sooo illegal i really dont care anymore.

Whats the point of carrying one anyway? If your answer is 'helping other boats' please tell me what kind of fire our little extinguishers are going to put out.

Avoiding tickets.

Exactly...

I have been warned, and I would rather be seen as working with them, instead of being their personal monthly ticket quota person.
:frown:

The law says 'you must carry a class B, Coast Guard approved Extinguisher, and it must be mounted in an accessible area' so I'm aiming to have 2/3 of the requiremtents as a show of good faith!:Banane01:

Bingo, Parr got a $170 ticket for no whistle, fire extinguisher, etc.

legally it has to be a certain size and USCG approved, which limits you basically to kiddie PWC model.

Check local boating laws:

I think there is one size smaller than the Kiddie PWC model that is USCG approved, but boating laws will state a minimum capacity based on boat length.

Just a small type B that I can hide easily, and does not act as a lead weight flying around the hull would be perfect!

Besides, someone told me size does not matter.:woot:

Freestyle is already 'illegal' so I just want to become a little less illegal.

I dont know about you but im not about to dive into my engine compartment for the fire extinguisher if it catches fire.

That is not the point, and as this particular Officer is part of the marine patrol here, I'm sure I will see him again.

As he kept telling me yesterday, his job is not to make or interpret the law, only to enforce it.:clown:

BTW, This guy did not know the law, only parts of it. Also, the only reason I got off, is I was not riding the skie at the time, and the ski was just being shuttled to the ramp where another ski was already loaded to go.

Carrying an extinguisher is more for compliance than function.

I hear ya, if my boat catches fire I will bail but it is an opportunity cost situation. Do I want to spend $15 on a F/E or $100+ on a ticket?

I will carry the extinguisher, make the PWC community look responsible and piss off water patrol by meeting all requirements.

PWC operators need to take special steps in case of fire. Because their fire extinguisher may not be easily accessible, they should simply swim away fast and use another vessel’s extinguisher.

Duh!

yup
they're usually 11 x 3 1/4 or 12 1/2 x 3- bc rated- marine section @ Wallyworld. Some dudes have some smaller ones but I'm not exactly sure on the legal qualifications. Justification if questioned could be...well as long as you have one. But that might have to be just the right cop on a good day!
