I do not miss my road bike. It was a great bike, superlight, but just did not enjoy it.

x2. My folks bought me a Nashiki road bike back in 92 when I went to college and I road the hell out of it for exercise, but nearly got killed everytime out. I wish Macon was more road bike friendly...I might get the itch to road ride more. A few years back I went to San Diego for a work conference and was amazed at how "outdoor friendly" much of the city was designed. U just get honked and yelled at (and sometimes side swiped) if you're in the way of a truck.
I think geographic region has a lot to do with how aware drivers are of bikers, since around here road biking is hugely popular and I've never had an issue with any drivers on the road rides I've done. However, I've learned from my riding buddy about 'effective cycling' or whatever it's called where you act like a car and make your intentions well known. He bikes all the time and commutes on it some too and rarely has issues.

There are a few roads here where bikers regularly ride. Long Out and Back routes. Enough so that the city put up signs asking motorist to be aware and courtious of bikers. I have ridden on a few of these. For the most part the cars move way over. Ran into an old mountain bike buddy from way back. He does road and MTB. He mentioned getting hit by a car. Some kids tossed a mountain dew can or bottle (Full) at him as they drove by. He has lost some of his vision and hearing because of it.
Be carefull and keep your head no a swivel. I never got one of those mirrors. I would invest in one!!!!!!! Cars can sneek up on you!

Ahh you'll be fine. I was riding mine to work from march till december through manhattan every day. 1030pm going in and 630am or later going home., sometimes morning rush hour if I had overtime. Now that is interesting weaving around looney taxi drivers. Got bumped by side view mirrors a few times at low speed but that was it.

The city currently has a big push to become more bike friendly and they have added several new bike lanes.
The new bike looks clean. When I got my first road bike I wanted to upgrade stuff, forks, wheels, derailers, ect. I would say just ride it, if you get into biking, spend the money on a better bike. Not that anything is wrong with what your on, IMO upgrading each compnent is not worth the cost.

I've gotten a few 7 mile rides in so far and it fits really well. I threw a new 12-26 cassette on to lower my gearing some since it's 53/39 up front, but am still hurting on hills---I need to get stronger and lose more weight but might pick up a compact crankset to use for now to lower it even more until I get used to it.
So far, here's what I've had to do to it: degum shifters, replace cables, wrap bars, new cassette, tighten bottom bracket, new tires, so maybe $80 beyond the $180 I paid for it. It's a sweet ride with good but lightly used older components.

I"m guessing they were gummed up with grease and road grime, so he de-gummed them.
Shimano shifters like to gum up if they sit for a while, so WD-40 or lacquer thinner or any other good solvent normally will get them going again. It worked for me on these just like a set of triggers last year. The grease will hold the pawl springs out and not let the ratchets work.
I did a 21 mile ride on it yesterday, works great. I'm swapping out the 53/39 to a 50/34 compact crankset until I get stronger, but otherwise it's perfect for me.

Got my compact crankset on this afternoon, much better gearing for me.
On a side note, I did a night trail ride last night and started hearing a harp playing on every pedal downstroke---my rear spokes are loose. Bicycle Wheel Warehouse e-mailed me back in 13 minutes, they want the wheel back there so they can figure out why this happened and fix it properly for me, they're paying shipping both ways too. Awesome customer service!

Yup, I ordered a set of XT hubs with Mavic Rims, requested the front hub to be 6 bolt disc, he forgot, sent them out as non disc, I contacted, he told me he would build me another one but I told him that I would just keep them, he still offered to build them up later if I decided. Great service.
Did a night ride Wed in the Snow!!!!!!!! Interesting. Snow had just started, start out with no snow on the floor, but by the time we finished it was about 1/2 inch. Weird riding with snow flying at you!

I had some flurries while I was riding, it's cool how the flakes light up in the light beams.
I just stripped the wheel to send it off and it's mainly left side spokes on the rear, but not all of them. Really strange so I understand why they want to see it so they can figure it out and fix it properly.
