Nice surf pic

I don't usually ride the back of a wave. Never understood why so many surf reports measure the back.
But, no matter how you measure it, you won't get a pic of me on the face of something like that!

its bigger than 25'.....

you guys are telling me that no one here would ride that on a jetski???

I might catch a lot of crap for saying this but I'd ride that- seriously. That thing is hugh but its just a rolling wall, its not like its breaking top to bottom. And its smooth to, I think a lot of guys on here would ride that if they had the chance. I would start over on the shoulder for the first few waves and progressively move to the more critical section. I'd definately want some one there to have my back in case, a wipe out on that thing would mean losing your ski.

I can see where you're coming from. If I were in that....I would stay WELL into the safe zone. Wouldn't play with it at all.
(provided I could even get out beyond the break! lol)
A wave like that can hurt more than the ski!

Don't see why you'd catch crap for that. I'm just an occasional surf rider and a wave like that is far beyond my own abilities.
I have tremendous respect for the guys that can and do ride stuff like that. Randy is at top of my big wave respect list.

Randy is at top of my big wave respect list.

I was talking to Randy (who has ridden a wave that big on his ski) about riding big surf around the time the "Mad Mat vs. Wydopen" thread was going around and Randy said "In order to ride a wave that big first you have to find a wave that big!" I think a lot of guys would step it up given the chance. In Janurary this year, My self, Matt Smith, Ross Champion, Ross's friend from Africa (can't remember his name) and Bob Humpus all rode Point Loma in South San Diego on a 20' day. After our first few waves we weren't even scared at all and just charged it. We all could easily see ourselves riding much larger surf. I hope I get the chance some day, because like Randy said, "If you can find it, you get to ride it"

Have you seen that pic of Randy at Todos Santos Island on about a 60 footer? He said it was like riding a wave the size of a pyramid with 2' chop on the face! The real danger is coping with the chop as your coming down the face of the wave. That pic you originally posted is so smooth that wouldn't be an issue. That looks like "Jaws" in Hawaii. The problem you'd have there would be competing with all the tow surfers trying to get a wave.

I’ve been beyond blessed to always visit during epic surf, so my opinion may be biased due to such. Your waves in SoCal are typically thick and full of slow, powerful energy from my personal experiences, plus they are smooth and spaced with incredible lovely seconds; this makes me wonder if your opinion could be biased too. If it rolled in as such, perhaps you would have a high adrenaline blast, provided you did not make a mistake. If you did so, you could still easily be toast. If you found a wave that big elsewhere, the odds of it rolling in as you may be accustomed to experiencing would likely be highly different. For instance, when Sebby’s hitting, it typically rolls fast with hard power, and with less seconds than what you are accustomed to experiencing (not that Sebby could hold a wave that size, just saying)…much more difficult to ride.

Edit: I would think some Auzzies might be able to offer some opinions.

all i know is that for me it doesnt matter how slow or glassy a wave is all that matters for me is how big the wave is compared to how deep the bottom is. surfing or jetskiing 15 foot surf in two feet of water really hurts.

Next big swell, we are going to Point Loma! We can even launch from the beach by my house and jacuzzi at the yacht club.

Can't for sure say whether or not I would have the balls to ride something like that. Most likely not......either way I would certainly piss my pants.
If I were to ride tat wave it would be in a much safer portion of the wave than where that guy is. I'm no hero, or a fool.
