I am in the process of looking a different setups for the spring.
The 865 and 828 are pretty close together in price new. The 828 seem to go for cheaper on the used market.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

What would be the better choice of engine for flatwater freestyle?

If you were to buy used, what is the better choice?

apples and oranges:

the 865 is a billet, powervalve cylinder which uses a STOCK crankshaft

the 828 is a 5mm stroked, stock modified 61x cylider..ported and resleeved for BB....the same package is availible in 771 with a stock crank

If anything shiold ever happen to the 828 cyl, youre done..its trashed.

The billet is much stronger, wont (or shouldnt) crack and you do not have to use a girdle head

the 865 package will also hold a stronger resale value than the 828

the 865 is the better engine, hands down...

ps..that being said, ANYTHING done by team scream will rip your arms off

XScream does make a billet 828 (+5mm stroke), chasingdaylight has one.

We can't directly compare our setups because mine has the recommended Boyesen intake and XSR 46mm carbs. I think he has an R&D intake with OEM 44m carbs.

Theoretically the bore/stroke ratio of the 828 is better.
But, I love the SS865 setup with the stock crank.

If you got a billet 828 for a "cheap price" there is no way you can go wrong with that. However, when you need to replace the crank you will be spending more.

XScream will rip your arms that's fo sho.

Xscream answered this very question. I can't remember if it was on their site or on this site but I believe they determined that their new stock stroke 865 was stronger and more reliable than the stroker 828. That said, if I could get one over the other and save $500+, that would be my choice.

That seems a little biased LOL.

A little biased but true. if you need to run a stock type cylinder to be in a special class than cool but other than that go with the 865..
865 advantages, they start at 827 and many bore to go. power valves to better liener power. they will have better resale value.
stock cranks, one day to get any part needed for it. carb issues are less .they easier to tune with power valves

827 advantages, harder/ sharper power curve? might hit harder if cc's are the same in both motors. diavantages. (i think) carbs are harder to tune. cranks are not as common might have to wait to have rebuilt.

The 828cc engine is older technology derived from when I built closed course racing engines that were re-designed for freestyle with different sleeves and porting.
The 828cc is 85mm bore w/73mm stroke (+5mm) using the stock 61X cylinder core.
The SS 865cc engine is our newest technology with using a OEM stock 68mm crankshaft.
This engine was designed from the ground up using 7 port cylinders, our flat powervalve system,
X Scream custom pistons with a billet cylinder and head construction.
The SS 865 engine makes more power, all across the rpm range including more topend over the 828.
The SS piston package has also been expanded to accommodate more oversize bores, 88mm, 88.5mm, 89mm, 89.5mm and last over at 90mm. This alone makes it a no brain'er with 4 more overbores for the life of the sleeves. We also now offer AV gas domes in addition to the pump gas and race gas domes or custom made to suit customers needs at no charge with the purchase of the top end kit or shortblock.
Because we use our own custom pistons made by Wiseco we were able to achieve a very good balance factor for longevity of the OEM crankshaft.
The complete 88mm piston assembly (everything that goes on the end of the rod) is 5 grams lighter than a stock 701 81mm bore stock assembly.
This has produced a very reliable high power stock stroke engine package without the expenses of a high end stroker crankshaft.

Chuck, Excuse me mr Supertune, that is some great info that answers alot of Q's for alot of people.

And yes I am their #1 fanboy. lol I am not a sponsored rider, I pay for all parts and labor, but Art and Robert GIVE ME tons of satisfaction everytime I squeeze my KVPI trigger that is attached to my BlackJack carbs that are attached to my 838cc 5 mil Lamey stroker ported and setup by Jetworks! I would have never dreamed of being sooo happy with my setup!

Don't get me wrong-X Scream builds good stuff too, just sayin explore all options and then decide.
