Carnage: Hull Cracks, I want some repair input.

hey guys, I cracked the side of my ski in a couple of places. I'm pretty sure it happened because I had a bad hood seal (hood was loose). I knew it wasn't good and I didn't fix it. my bad. :banghead:

I want peoples input on how to fix it. I have an understanding of what needs to be done but want some tips.

I would grind out the crack (from both sides), drill a hole at the end of the crack. Then glass over the inside with multiple layers that start small and get bigger.
Then make the outside look purdy with epoxy & thickener.
That's how I fixed a gnarly crack in my Superjet.

start small, how small? would you add any cat hair (if you're talking about epoxy resin) to the thickened epoxy?

I guess you could. I only did epoxy & cabosil (though I have later switched to flour) for the outside.

As for starting small....I would say enough to cover the crack plus at one inch on each side.

I pulled the stickers and hood seal off and the crack in the corner looks much worse.

BTW my ABC still hurts...

I use a 1/8" spiral bit in the Dremel to grind out cracks, it leaves a nice rounded edge at the ends to prevent stress concentration there, and 1/8" is a good size to fill with resin mixed with filler.

Grind the crack out, fill it with thickened resin then lay glass on the back side while that is still wet so it all bonds well. 15 ounce biaxial non-woven would be my choice for fiberglass.

would you do that with only one layer? would you use polyester resin?

Do not use polyester resin. Personally, I would do at least 3 layers.

Epoxy resin. I'm no pro but I'd think up to three layers of biax on the inside (maybe 4", then 5-6", then 6-7"). Start small on the outside (ie, 1"x2" then 5"x4" of mat) and sand it, fill it, and glaze it smooth. Be sure to glass under the lip too - don't just fill the ridge. You might want to saw a straight line down that crack to give you a nice even crack to grind out. Been there, done that (actually, derm done that but same thing...)

actually, took her to the pond yesterday...threw on my TLR jetted to what waterfreak and SFL rec'd and she RIPPED>..

now, that boat ripped in the beginning with a 44 too....but not like it felt yesterday....

too bad I had that carb with me the whole time :banghead:
