Boys,
I'm losing my bottom end oomph on my couch/1996 Seadoo GSX. I'm no mechanical whiz, but I know the ski is running great outside of this prob. Is it most likely a pump in need of some TLC or should I investigate elsewhere? My buds pump went sour on his XP and it feels kinda the same. Lots of engine rev just not alot of giddyup off the line. It runs fine up top. :dunno:

I think the wear ring is replaceable in some models of the Seadonts and excessive clearance or bent/damaged impeller blades will cause loss of giddy up and go. Get your head up in the intake grate with a good flashlight and inspect the pump & impeller. Any good ski mechanic will be able to figure it out quickly.

I just replaced the ware ring in the gti I just bought it was so bad that there was pieces if it hanging off the sides. It was a rubber coated hard plastic and the rubber coating was falling off. VERY poor design but an easy fix. More than likely the problem you can see it if you inspect the pump. And do a compression test to eliminate the possibility of the motor going south.

Just shine a flashlight up into the exit nozzle, look at the clearance around the impeller it should be very little, look closely at the wear ring it should have no deep gouges or missing pieces,no white part should be showing anywhere, also look closely at the trailing edges of the impeller this is where most impeller damage occurs, you can judge by looking at the distance between the edge of the blade and the edge of the wear ring to determine if the impeller is bent or not.Now climb up under the boat and look through the intake grate for the same things, bent impeller edges or damaged wear ring.

another quick way to check for a common prob we have is to tilt the bow way up, fill the hull with some water till the driveshaft is under and then check for a leak at your carbon seal, where the shaft goes thru the hull. ive had to replace dozzens of those on seadonts. ive even seen the circlip on the shaft wear out enough to cause lack of pressure on that seal and leak air at low speeds. id definatly check your wear ring and impeller as said above first!
