Yamaha starter indexing/terminal direction

Are people indexing the middle portion of the starter so the terminal faces out towards the side rather than upward? A buddy picked up a ski recently and when he pulled the motor to fix and inspect some various assembly issues I noticed that the terminal for his positive cable on the starter faces the left side of the hull (it looks like it would be much easier to access like this as opposed to tucked under the b-pipe manifold where the waterlines make the space even tighter)... I've never done this and I don't think I've ever seen it done before a....I assume the two small pinch bolts can be loosened and the middle section rotated to move the terminal provided the internal leads are long enough and there is nothing that forces alignment of the three sections...

Is this a typical mod for convenience?IMG_20251103_071443.jpg

The two 701's 62T and 61X index differently , the 62T starter will come out without removing the exhaust , the 61X stsrter will not or at least it won't with a stock exhaust , have no idea if it will with a B pipe or a Coffmans pipe installed , couldn't say , most likely it's a starter from a different model .

Other than the indexing and the end caps , all of the starters are pretty much the same, I have swapped end caps and put Yamaha starters on Kawis and Seadoo 951's before , Seadoo 951 and 650-750-800 Kawi starters are identical.

Is it the mounting holes on the case that are positioned differently or are there two different starter part numbers?
Nevermind, I see that on some 760 starters on ebay the terminal points outward and the endcap has the mounting bolts facing the side of the case instead of front to back... changing the end cap to a normal superjet version would result in the picture I posted above.

No the holes for the small full length bolts that hold it together are in different places, I think the motor side cap has multiple sets of holes in it for different indexing if I remember right , any time there is the slightest change in a part the part number is changed as well.

I haven't had a Yamaha starter apart in a while but I was just piecing together a starter for a Kawasaki and that one had a tab on the end cap that fit into a notch in the body to index it. You could easily put the cap on in a different position with the tab outside of the notch if you wanted to.

Also fun little fact there are sm-13 mitsuba starters from other applications that have very similar appearing shaft/pinion gear but not quite the same so it won't fit.
