I am preparing for my jump to hd and I am experimenting with various media center apps and I think xbmc for linux has got to be one of the best opensource pieces of software ever created.

here is a screen shot of my current set up.

man where are all my nerdy internet jetski friends for support?

here are a few more screen shots. These are off the main site for this skin. I still need to figure out the scrapers and library mode stuff but I think I have a pretty nice set up on my desktop now. I don't know that my media center is going to be capable of 720p and I know it wont do 1080p but I will give it a shot. If it won't do it I have a $186.97 back up plan lined up. I think this would be able to pull 1080p no problem and I can add a blu-ray drive down the road.

My next project is to get a mce remote working with it. This skin is pretty nice for alpha software. seems totally usable. I think the standard skin is a bit easier to set stuff up on. I will probably keep doing that and then switch to the aeon skin.

If any one figures out how to get the movie data from imdb let me know.

So it's for playing back your own media, not for recording live tv? I'm getting ready to build another Mythtv box and looking at alternatives, plus possibly adding a hd tuner card for QAM.

hey Jett if you want to run windows and not ubuntu check out the open source project MediaPortal. They have ported the aoen skin too it and I believe it does live tv too. We do netflix and torrents so xbmc has me covered.

I think I'm going to stick with Myth for now, I'm finally retiring my old Shuttle XPC and going to a regular desktop so I'll have extra slots for a HD tuner card to go with the PVR-150 so i can get the QAM channels we get on our tv.

It's always disappointing to have to watch something recorded in regular definition instead of hd on a 42" because you see how grainy it is.

I have to deal with the WAF - Wife Approval Factor. She's used to Myth, and it's so nice to be able to pull up Mythweb to setup recordings/etc from any computer regardless of OS or having anything installed. (I change laptops every 3 months or so it seems, and always reinstalling the OS due to testing for work)

Myth does what we need, but I may toy with that this weekend to check it out.

Ok guys I am a complete noob when it comes to this stuff. But here is what I got. I just bought a new tv 42" HD a few months ago at a yardsale. For $400 less than bestbuy's price. And the girl threw in the HTPC. It is a 2.6 Ghz something dual core intel processor with 2 G of ram. 800 Gb HD. It has 600 something GB of movies and shows already loaded on the HD. Wireless mouse and keyboard but I use it like a computer.

O finally got the resolution set up so that I can actually read the words on the TV with the RGB cable. Resolution is 1366x768 which the suggested for this tv

OK my questions.....
Is going over to the HDMI that much better than what I have?
How do I get a media center and is it worth it? Also where can I go to get more knowledge on this subject? I have been poking around but I haven't really gotten any real info. Also the computer itself has a DVI output on the video card but and the audio card has front, center, left, right, and rear but that is it. How can I go about getting somethign to record live TV. How do you get the signal into the PC?

Thanks for helping the wanna be media center geek

You need a tuner card (standard or high def) to hook up your cable or antenna, a program like MythTV or SageTV or several others to do the recording/playback, and that's about it for the minimum.

Some cable companies send the local channels in HD over the basic cable signal and a QAM tuner card can pick those up. That's how I watch HD on our 42" since it has a QAM tuner in it. You can also use an antenna if you're close enough to the towers, you can look those up online and get the distances to your house, what kind of antenna to use, etc.

MythTV only runs on Linux at this point, and setup can be a pain to get everything functioning properly, but it's gotten better.

Copy/paste from the gOS forum.

Market Share for Linux is on a steady rise, see the numbers below for yourself.

May 2007 - 1.26%
June 2007 - 1.30%
July 2007 - 1.32%
August 2007 - 1.34%
September 2007 - 1.38%
October 2007 - 1.75%
November 2007 - 1.74%
December 2007 - 1.77%
January 2008 - 1.84%
February 2008 - 2.01%
March 2008 - 2.02%
April 2008 - 1.89%
May 2008 - 1.95%
June 2008 - 1.95%
July 2008 - 1.91%
August 2008 - 2.00%
September 2008 - 1.99%
October 2008 - 2.09%
November 2008 - 2.11%

Thats a 67% increase in market share over about a year and a half.
Apple's shares have increased 41% over the same period, which though Mac OSX is often spoken of as being the fastest growing OS, Linux market share is actually growing at a quicker pace.
Albeit Mac OSX still accounts for nearly three times an install base as Linux, its still very impressive that Linux is garnering such an increase in Market Share when taking into account the marketing blitzes of both MS and Apple for there products.
